Braces before wedding

KM, on September 7, 2013 at 12:30 PM Posted in Planning 0 28

So I'm gonna share a little bit of a personal struggle with you guys....

My parents failed to pull my thumb out of my mouth when I was little, and it went on a little too long and really had an effect on my adult teeth. I have a serious overbite that really bothers me, and the tooth next to my very front tooth on the left of the pictures is pushed pretty far back. I always told myself that I would have them fixed before I get married. Well, the time has come and I want to get braces! I have about two years until I get married, and after speaking to an orthodontist, I'm weight the pros and cons. Maybe you guys can help me out?

Pros:

~My teeth will be straighter for my wedding

~I still have dental under my dad that will cover 25% (until I'm 26)

~I can have them taken off for my wedding day

Cons:

~They will cost $7,000 (paid over time) that will stress our wedding budget

~They will take 3 years, and my wedding will land right in the middle so I won't know exactly what they'll look like

The first pic is of my teeth at a "bad" angle and the second is an angle where they don't look that bad...

They don't look bad. I think you still have a beautiful smile. I was a thumb sucker too and I wish my mom got me braces as well when I was younger. I could use braces now maybe I will someday but I will be 40 soon and I've learned to live with it but I am still self-conscious sometimes. Are you getting Invisalign ones? If you want the braces, I would get them.

$7000 is a lot of money to not know what they will look like on your wedding day. As of right now you at least know what they look like. Which btw, I think you are beautiful!

I had the same problem. Sucked my thumb until probably 4 years old, maybe 5. I have about the same top teeth as you. I'm currently paying for my 11 year old DD's braces, once her's are paid for it will be my son's turn. I highly doubt I will get a turn lol

Because of the way my bite is shaped, the invisalign won't work for me, and they take forever to work. I would have to get "traditional" braces, but with new technology, they are pretty easy to disguise. I wish mine had done it too, but it just wasn't a priority for my parents at the time. They regret it now too.

Can you do invasilign? I waited until highschool to do mine because i stomped my feet in gradeschool. I did invasilign on top and regulars on bottom and noone even noticed.

    @Soon to be Lisa M.

That's something else I fear...I'm afraid if I don't do it now when I'm REALLY motivated to get them done, I will never do it.

The orthodontist said that because I have a "narrow arch", the Invisalign wont work. I'm not too concerned about what the braces look like on my teeth, especially since I can have them taken off for my wedding

Like you Lisa my daughter has them now, I'm sure my son will be next...no turn for me. My mom just couldn't afford it back in the day. My daughter gets the colors of hers changed every 6wks when they change her wires. I barely notice them on her anymore.

Like I said earlier, I think your smile looks great regardless.

Thank you! My orthodontist actually tried talking me out of them lol, but I've been so adamant about it for so many years, it's hard to even thinking about not doing it

First, get a second opinion on the Invisalign. I did them when I was 23 or 24. Great decision. Because of a few small promotions, they cost me $4868. If you haven't considered it already, look into care credit. That's how I paid for mine (I had been off my parents insurance for a while at that point). I would definitely do it, it's a huge confidence booster...even if you can't do Invisalign. I would get your e-pics done before getting them. Oh! And since my sister has braces right now, don't ever get the white/clear. She ate spaghetti and had to live with that stain until it was time to change it like three months later.

Btw: Invisalign only took me 9 months to complete. 5 months for the top, and 9 months for the bottom.

I think I might get a second opinion. I went to the BEST orthodontist in my area, with all of the state of the art technology (the braces tighten using my own body heat over time). I have a care credit card already for my dog's vet bills (she's a really sick puppy), but the APR on that thing is astronomical. Luckily, my orthodontist will let me finance with them interest free! I was planning on doing the e-pics before just so I can see how they look with a camera better than an I-phone...it might make a huge difference!

Thanks for the advice Smiley smile

Oh oops! My care credit had 0apr for two years! Of course I lost these pictures, but I took a picture if my mouth at the beginning of each new set to keep up with your progress. Good luck! You are stunning regardless of your decision!

How long your 0% apr with Care Credit lasts depends on the amount of each charge.

Tooth health is extremely important and if you need braces for reasons other than just having straight teeth I would recommend doing it, even if it's going to stress the wedding budget.

And invisilign are really only good for small cases. My FBIL is a dentist, we've discussed this before.

And, my sister had her braces for three years, every case is different, and while your teeth don't look bad, they do look like they really need a lot of work so I would believe that you can't use invisilign and that it will take several years.

Yeah I know Invisalign is totally out...I didn't really want them anyway. It would only be cosmetic, my teeth are in perfect shape otherwise (never even had a cavity) and my wisdom teeth don't need to be pulled either

Hi Kirsten! I just have to say I had braces for 5 years, and ended up having to have jaw reconstructive surgery because my mouth wasn't shaped right (there were 2 inches between my top teeth and my bottom. only my back molars touched). However, even though I wore my retainer for the recommended 2 years, my teeth still shifted a little. Now my upper right little incisor is pushed back and pushing forward my upper right front incisor. I'm thinking of doing invisiline, before the wedding, but just saying, braces don't fix everything.

Wow! My orthodontist suggested jaw surgery, but I opted out on that one simply because this is for cosmetic reasons only. I know a lot of people who have had teeth shift, so that make me nervous. I was considering just getting a permanent retainer so that it doesn't happen

They don't look bad at all my teeth are bad i have places where when the baby tooth came out i had no adult one to come in and was born without wisdom teeth i also have a small mouth.

I had braces a when i was about 13 for over two years and had to have them taken off he said it would take two years and he did not put the bottoms on till the two year mark and he was trying to pull my back teeth to the front for the spaces with no teeth so he made my bite worse.

So i had them removed early due to this and that i could not eat most of the time i was in so much pain(i was also allergic to metal they think) My dentist said it was a good thing i did or my teeth would have fell out by the time i got done i have thought about Invisalign but to me it's no big deal how they look as long as they are healthy and they are i have never have had a cavity. And it cost way to much>
