Bra Fitting - Soma?

MrsNerd, on July 5, 2016 at 8:28 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21

Happy Tuesday! I need bridal bra advice!

When I purchased my dress at David's Bridal, we spent the first 45 minutes trying on strapless corsets (snapping and unsnapping...) until something fit. I told the saleswoman that I was a 38D. We kept trying until I was eventually in a 34B - now, I've lost 20lbs in the last 6 months and was never re-fitted, but it did NOT all come from the girls. The corset was unflattering and uncomfortable.

I've heard Soma is good - does anyone have opinions, or another suggestion?

I have never heard of soma, but I have heard JCPenny does bra fitting.

I don't have personal experience, but my co-worker was raving about them today!

Soma is good and most local intimates stores where they are in the room helping you try them on. Intimate Designs, LaJolie Bra Fitting Salon... I would trust local stores a little more than chain clothing stores like JC Penny. And this is coming from a girl with a rare size, 32M.

Worked at VS for a few years, I wore a 34G. Equivalent to a 36DDD if you shop there. I'm getting a bra and sewing it into my dress so no strapless craziness. I almost always use double sided fashion tape too just as extra security no matter what dress

Do NOT go to jcpenney or Victoria secret for bra fitting unless you want an ill fitting bra. Measure yourself.

Measure snugly around the ribcage. You should not be able to get more than a finger between you and the tape. This is your band size. If it is an odd number, go up one number.

Bend at the waist and stand with your back parallel to the floor, no shirt or bra on. Measure around your back and the fullest part of your (hanging) bust, across the nipples. For every inch in difference, count that as one cup size.

    For example, 6" difference = F/DDD cup.

Longline bras may need a sister size as they are supposed to be tight, so for someone who is regularly a 36DD/E, they might try a 34DDD/F. You should also try on bras using the "scoop and swoop" method, leaning forward into the cups, then scooping ALL breast tissue, including migrated tissue (commonly called back fat,) toward the cups.

@mna thank you!! I'm going to try this now! Cross your fingers for me haha

ETA: LOL migrating tissue. I like that much more than "back fat".

I had to return my bra 3 times because of weight loss. Just take it back. I ended up in a 32c and was poring out the front but I tried on a dress made of the same material and close to the same style as mine and it fit just fine at the store Tried it on with my dress once I got home an was good to go.

I'm so glad my FI is out of town right now and didn't have to see my struggling with a tape measure for the last twenty minutes. I think I'm going to get a professional fitting. I also think I may have hurt myself lol. Thanks for the advice everyone!

    ETA: I'm not coordinated.

Lane bryant bra fits, way better than dept stores. I'd also call torrid and ask. Where do you live? If you're anywhere near DC, go to trousseau in Vienna. They're amazing.

I like soma their bras have the structural support on the sides I need. They are pricey but I like them. There is one in the quakerbridge malls the cherry Hill mall and Paramus.

Futuremrsnerd: actually, a lot of back fat really IS migrated breast tissue from wearing ill fitting bras! After wearing a properly fitted bra for awhile and doing the whole scoop/swoop thing, you might even see an increase in cup size or two due to tissue returning to its proper place.

I don't know if it's far for you, but I like Johari in Montclair. It's a small shop, but they do great fittings.

@md421 Montclair isn't far at all! I ended up going to Garden State Plaza bc my "entourage" lol (my mom and Aunt) are closer to there. Ended up having a great experience at both Soma and Nordstrom. Caused a scene, as we usually do, and had the very polite young saleslady laughing so hard she was almost in tears. I said "I haven't had this many people see me without a shirt since my 20's", because I forgot who I was with lol. They both proceeded to pick up every sparkly piece of bridal lingerie and insisted I needed a thong that said "I do" in rhinestones. Yup.

Soma is great but expensive. I buy my regular bras there but find their shapewear options more limited. Once you know your size, however, you can go somewhere with more options (like a Kohls or better yet a Hanes/Bali outlet!) and try lots of stuff on for comfort.
