Box Wine

CareBear, on October 27, 2015 at 6:13 PM Posted in Planning 0 35

We decided to only serve beer and wine at the wedding. I was thinking about getting the majority of the wine in box wine form due to cost.

What is your favorite box wine? AND Do you think people would be offended if I only served box wine? I mean.... It is free booze!!!

Personally, I would opt for more affordable bottled wine over boxed. I love wine, and am pretty undiscerning when it comes to the quality, but I'd say box wine is taking it a little far. It just wouldn't look good. If you could pour the wine into carafes first (so no one sees the boxes) and serve from those, that could work?

I've seen/heard several people use box wine! You can always build a box to go over the wines and just have a open spot for the nozzle. Write something cute on the box for each kind.

Boxed wine is actually far better storage for wine than bottles. It just gets a bad rep from ones like Franzia. It stays fresh longers, keeps out light betters, no cork taint is possible, and a better value.

Seconding Black Box. It's delicious and the big boxes are 3L (abou 4 bottles) for about $16 at Total Wine. You can pay $16 for one bottle of decent wine.

We have bartenders serving from a bar so SweetBean I dont think building a box would be possible.

Black Box, Botta; there are a number of decent box wines, but yes, put it in carafes.

I'm fine with box wine, but have you thought about bottles from a place like Aldis or Trader Joes? Trader Joe's has $3 bottles of wine. Aldis has one of my favorite red blends for $4 a bottle. And I drink a lot of wine Smiley smile

I think you're fine with box wine!

A few years ago, I worked for a time share company in their activities department. We had a "Wine and Cheese" social every Saturday that was pretty popular. We served Franzia boxed wine and people LOVED it. It was strange.. Many people would make comments along the lines of: "I never liked _______ wine, until I tried this"

The trick is to put it in a carafe. No one needs to see the box!

Black box! I doubt anyone will care, but the carafe idea is fantastic.

    Another vote for black box.

Like Stephanie said there are actually advantages to storing wine in boxes vs bottles. Boxed wine just gets a bad wrap because some boxed wines are bad. What matters most is the quality of the wine that goes into the box or bottle. Quality boxed wine is far superior to cheap crappy bottled wine. But I agree with the suggestion to pour it in carafes.

Naked grape is amazing for boxed wine! I'm a huge wine drinker but I can't tell the difference when it comes to naked grape. We're going to use naked grape for our wedding not only is it affordable but 1 box equals 4 bottles.

Yep, another vote for box wine here. Stephanie and Natalie hit the nail on the head. I've never been a huge fan of Black Box personally... I think there's better options. (At least for reds... We don't drink whites.) Vin Vault, Naked Grape, and Loft are all great. I personally think the Loft cab is the best... It's $30/box and is comparable to a bottled cab we love that retails for $18/bottle.

Please, please don't serve two (three) buck Chuck at your wedding. Nothing has ever given me a hangover headache like that rotgut TJ's wine, even after just two glasses.

I thought about two buck chuck but I heard that there is bad stuff in that wine so I dont want to drink it myself let alone serve it to others at my wedding. I will not be having that at my wedding Cats!

MrsT is very wrong, the vessel the wine comes in has nothing to do with the quality of the wine itself. In fact, a box is where the wine will have the LEAST amount of exposure to air, meaning that a light/clear wine bottle with a cork is actually the worst way to transport wine...

If people are serving it from behind a bar, do not even bother with carafes. That is the silliest thing I have ever heard. Just serve from the boxes, below the table if it bothers you that much.

If anyone actually knows anything about wine, they know that the box has nothing to do with the quality. If they don't know anything about wine they may be judgey but they know nothing about viticulture and your job is not to educate them Smiley smile

ETA: We served boxed wine at our wedding, and have several friends who are all viticulturists or soms and everyone was happy. It was not a particularly low-budget wedding.

For the love of God, do not serve 3 buck chuck. I will not go into detail but there is a reason it costs $3.
