Bounced check

Crystal, on April 29, 2014 at 7:51 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

Has anyone received a check for a gift and it bounced? What did you do? My brother gave us a $5k check as a wedding present and it I just got notice that it bounced. I'm not sure if I should say something or try to redeposit it. I can't believe he wrote a check for that much if he can't afford it.

Since it's your brother, I would just tell him it bounced and see what he says.

Definitely give him a heads up--maybe he had to move some money around and didn't think you'd deposit it so soon.

I would probably mention it to him before trying to re-deposit it. I think most banks charge a fee each time a check bounces (to both you and him, I believe), so if you can avoid those fees again it would be to both your and his benefit.

I agree with Blissful, nice brother!

Just let him know so he can fix it. I agree with kahlcara, maybe he though he had a little while.

When he gave me the check he told me he was giving it to me early, because he didn't want me to stress with the wedding extras and vet bills. I waited a week to deposit the check.

For sure say something to him. There are fees involved - plus it's your brother! Worst case scenario is he says - oh I forgot to transfer the money around and you deposit it next week.

Damn ... my brother would never give me $5k lol, but my in-laws gave exactly that for wedding costs... you're a lucky girl! Smiley smile

Uhm, can we trade brothers? Lol, just kidding. Just send him a quick text. Just ask him if you needed to wait a few days before depositing again so he can get what he needs into that account.

As I sit at work at the bank I giggled a little. I can help with this. We do charge fees for each time the check is returned ($37).We also charge the customer that deposited the item if it's returned ($15 per item per time). If he is on the account with someone else, such as a wife or girlfriend, she might have spent money he didnt know about. However, he will get a notice in the mail that the check bounced. I wouldn't text him, I'd at least call him.
