Borrowed wedding dress, is it still in style?

My friend said I could have her old wedding dress. She was married over 10 years ago. What do you guys think? Is it still in style? I’m amazed that it actually seems to fit quite well. When I finally go dress shopping, it’s going to be hard to beat “free”! I wanted strapless, A-line so this does fit that bill, except I kind of wanted it to be more of a sweetheart neckline and without the stripey things.
We’re planning to have a less than $10k backyard lakefront wedding so even if this isn’t my very favorite, I’m thinking I can put more effort into a reception dress and help save money for other items.

It's so pretty on you! I don't think it looks dated at all. So many dresses look like every other dress I've seen, but not this one. I agree that you could take it to a seamstress to see about making it more of a sweetheart neckline. While you're there, maybe you can see if the seamstress can add a lace overlay to quiet down the stripes a bit. I think it's fine without it, but if you're concerned, you may try it. It may make it feel a bit more like yours.

I was considering wearing my Oma's wedding dress when I originally started looking into wedding gowns. However, the modifications on it would have been too big as I'm a little more... well, gifted in my chest area than my Oma was. However, I'm taking something from the dress in order to honor her. If you like the dress though and it fits you well, then go right ahead! Who cares what's in style? If your happy with it and you love it, then I say wear it!

That’s a pretty dress. What I like most is that it’s NOT something “trendy” that you see on a regular basis (honestly, all of those dresses look the same). But your dress actually stands out. I like the mix of patterns with the lace and the stripes. My dress is new, but from the designer’s Fall 2015 collection. It also has somewhat of a wide striped design and I love that it’s not a dress that all other brides have these days. I definitely think you should go with that dress if you like it.

It's a gorgeous dress and truly classic. As a PP mentioned, you can always get the neckline altered to a sweetheart if you prefer. I personally like the stripes but you need to love it too.

I love the stripes! I think it gives it a modern twist to the classic. Plus you look AMAZING in it. Rock it for the ceremony and get a cute short reception dress to dance in!

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the feedback! I will just have to wait and see how the budget and shopping unfolds once my engagement ring comes in. Smiley smile It's ordered, but I feel like I can't actually go to the store to try on dresses until he proposes. Smiley smile

I'm not sure who the designer is. Sorry!

I LOVE that and I love that it's not something you see all the time anymore. It doesn't look "outdated" or anything though. definitely wear it if you like it.

I love it on you! And I think it stands out more because it isn't a style you see frequently (in a good way).

Absolutely do not alter your friend’s borrowed wedding dress without her enthusiastic consent, especially if you’re changing the dress in a substantial way like changing the neckline.

There’s a difference between borrowing and being handed-down a dress. I interpreted “my friend said I could have her old wedding dress” as a hand-me-down. In that case, it’s like altering any used dress you find. If it’s just semantics, then of course you shouldn’t change something you’re borrowing.

I think it's really pretty on you! If you don't like the stripe things on it you could talk to different seamstresses to see if they could do anything with it
