Boring Reception

I have a fear that our wedding reception is going to be boring. The reason i say this is because we dont have many people our age attending. Its mainly older folks like 50+. Also, we arent very traditional and plan on not having a bouquet or garter toss or having any toasts. Would that be strange?...

Did you dind it weird or boring?

Honestly, if it's a lot of older relatives there, they will enjoy themselves just catching up with people they don't see very often. After our ceremony, we had just a simple lunch with no tosses, cake cutting, music, or dancing. And we pretty much had to shovel people out at the end of it, because they got so busy chatting with each other.

I agree with 2d Bride, many will probably think it's perfectly fun getting to see old friends/family. However I know how you feel, most of our wedding will be FH's family and friends and they are all Chinese and their culture isn't much of the dancing type (except for maybe a few...hopefully). I'm sure they'll care more about things like food and drinks than they will care about whether the place was really pumping. I know that it might not feel as fun to you, but I think your guests will probably still have a good time. Maybe to get people on the dance floor you could do an anniversary dance, or possibly the shoe game (you can look those up). That might be fun for the older people.

I'm old and trust me, a garter toss wouldn't make it un-boring for me....

You'd be amazed at how old people love to talk to other people, listen to music, and have a glass of wine or four. We don't need to be constantly entertained to have a good time.

Uhmm.... I am 52 and like a few posters have said, my friends and I LOVE a good party. I wouldn't worry unless you have a bunch of poopy 50 year olds... but 50 is really the new 30. The toss and garter are stupid, IMO, and won't be missed no matter the age of your crowd. We are doing an afternoon wedding and to get people dancing, we are having the DJ call up two of my friends (ages 56 and 55) and my FH son (age 24) who LOVE to dance and are the best dancers... THEY will get the party started. If it is getting boring, YOU should go out and dance and grab people from the crowd.

Lol older folks! We outlast/outdance our kids and their friends most of the time.

When I go to family parties, I always hang with the "older folks." They are hilarious. We're having a brunch reception, so probably won't be any crazy dancing, or bouquet or garter toss, but I think with good food, alcohol, and conversation, people will entertain themselves.

I agree with the other ladies "older folks" have a good time too. My grandma is 76 and at every party she is on the dance floor having a good time. As long as the music is good people will dance. I am not doing a garter or bouquet toss it just makes things awkward for guest. I'm sure you will be fine.

Well I'm marrying an older folk and his friends are a blast to party with. I'm skipping that stuff too but I did decide I want an anniversary dance and I will give my bouquet to the longest married couple.
