Boring Reception

FuturemrsS, on June 5, 2015 at 2:22 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 28

I have a fear that our wedding reception is going to be boring. The reason i say this is because we dont have many people our age attending. Its mainly older folks like 50+. Also, we arent very traditional and plan on not having a bouquet or garter toss or having any toasts. Would that be strange? Have you ever attended a wedding without these things? Did you dind it weird or boring?

Good food, drinks and music - even older folks like to get down.

I wouldn't qualify speeches, garter or bouquet tosses as entertainment. Nobody cares about speeches really as a guest, and the garter/bouquet tosses are either awkward or only last a few minutes.

    Emmy's got it down pat.

I second Emmy. Most of my guests will be older (FH and I have an age gap) but I know that they like to have a good time. Besides, if the Bride and Groom are having a blast, the guests will follow suit :-)

I'm not doing the tosses, and that really isn't entertainment. Most of the time the single people hide when that is brought up anyway. Just make sure your music fits your crowd, and you shouldn't have a problem!

Our families are party people to begin with, so I wasn't really worried about that, but there were a few family friends that I wasn't sure about. I found that doing a longevity dance got EVERYBODY up and included those who weren't into the dancing. We didn't do a garter or bouquet toss either, and I don't think anyone missed it.

I thought mine would be too but you keep the music rotating genres, drinks flowing it will be all fine.

I did not have the tosses either and it was fine.

How long will the reception be? if its only 3 hours long you could get away with it not being boring. However, if its like 5 hours then it might be a little boring.

You're not having toasts or bouquet/garter toss. So what are you having? Photobooth? Dancing? Slideshow? Interactive centerpieces/favors? Just trying to get a better idea of what to suggest.

If the music is good and the food is good, it'll be a good wedding. (Alcohol is a bonus to a good wedding!)

I'm not having a toss of any kind either. I'm Keeping my reception to about 50 people, probably the same age group. It'll be more like an expensive dinner party. No dj. Just a piano player. I'm more old fashion and like simple things. It fits our personalities perfectly. We are having it at a small inn. I think as long as it's what you want, your guest will enjoy it. And if they don't, there is no reason you and your new hubby won't!

My mom's third wedding (no, she's not married to him anymore, either...) was like what you describe-- no dancing, no toasts... I think a lot of older people enjoy that kind of wedding-- they love to sit around and chat.

We aren't doing the bouquet toss nor the garter toss. The last thing I want is my FH going up under my dress in front of my grandpa. No thanks. But I will admit, I had the same thought as you. We decided to have s'mores for guests as our venue has a patio area right off the hall with a small fire pit. We plan to have a DJ but not a whole lot else!

It sounds like it will be fun!! We aren't doing a garter toss or anything either. Maybe a bouquet toss. We haven't decided for sure yet...LOL! But, as long as there is good food and music, everyone should have a great time! =)

Not having a garter or bouquet toss, because we have some other traditions we would like to observe. However, I truly believe that good food, music, drinks and awesome people are what will make the reception. Don't worry about what you can't control; as long as you have done your best to ensure guests are comfortable, it's up to them to enjoy themselves and I believe they will Smiley smile

Well when garter toss time came, only 4 people were up there.......... uh yeah. SOOO I went out and tagged people and "ordered" them up there. All while James Bond song was playing. It was pretty funny actually.

For that age group, make sure you play some old school. 70's 80's and 90's. Try to stay away from too much of the hardcore rap. Definitely have good food and drink. Doesn't matter if you serve alcohol or not. We don't have to have alcohol to have a good time.
