Booking Venue before food tasting???

MrsRidley, on December 28, 2016 at 7:48 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

Hey everyone! What is your take on food tasting? From my understanding a food tasting will help you decide if you would like to book a venue. There's a specific venue that I have heard nothing but great things about. I asked about their food tasting policy, and here it is: Food tasting is done 2-3 months prior to the wedding. If you wish to do the food tasting prior to booking, it with the assumption that you will book the venue the same day. If you do not book the venue the same day as the tasting, there will be a charge of $100/pp in attendance at the food tasting...I have heard and read great reviews about this venue and their food, but why would I book first then taste the food? Does this make sense to anyone? Or is this a normal thing. All the other venues I looked at allowed for a food tasting prior to booking for a small fee ($40-50/pp).

I was told something similar, at least that the tasting is done closer to the wedding. Because of my personal situation, we'll probably do it sooner. But we booked without the tasting and from what I've seen that's fairly normal.

Our venue doesn't even do tastings. They're menu is pretty self-explanatory and the reviews on yelp, trip advisor and their own website all said the food was awesome so we decided to book it anyway.

Our venue included a complimentary menu tasting for two in our contact prior to the event. It was for the purpose of determining which items we wanted to serve at our wedding, not to determine whether or not we wanted to go with the venue.

Our venue periodically holds large group tasting events that they invite newly contracted or potential clients to attend. It's less specific than the individual tasting my FH and I attended, but you still sample a lot of food, see various linen options, try cocktails, and taste desserts. My FH and I are planning from out of town, so my parents attended it instead about a month after we signed the contract. They said they also brought in a few of their preferred vendors, including the baker we chose for our cake, and she had cake samples.

They attended a similar event at a different venue we were considering right before we chose our venue. You may want to see if your venue puts on any sample nights like this that they invite prospective clients to attend.

Our venue only does tastings 4 times a year so we really had no choice but to book without tasting. Here's my thing. These are wedding venues who do this weekly. I trust they know what they are doing.

We booked months before and then had a complimentary tasting for us and two others.

My venue also doesn't do tastings until 2-3 months prior. Doesn't bother me at all because I've been to several events there and have eaten in their restaurant. It seems to be the norm around here too.

That's how ours is. We booked back in October and won't get a tasting for another ~13 months. I have never heard a bad review about them even from friends who have gone to weddings there before. They don't allow outside catering and are constantly booked. So if the food was bad, I don't think they would be booked that much

We booked before doing a tasting. I'm not thrilled about it, but we get to sample the food in a few weeks at an event. That being said, we did extensive research and read hundreds of reviews before making a decision on the venue.

Yeah, I have heard great things about the venue, I just didn't feel comfortable with the policy, because all of the other venues I looked at had a different policy of tasting before you book. It took me by surprise, but all you ladies made me feel more comfortable about tasting after I book.

Ours does the tasting about 6 months out and allows you to taste the entire menu. That said, it is also under the assumption that you have already booked.

Seeing as we have eaten at their many restaurants and had amazing food every time, I don't see us having an issue with their catering either, so we are pretty comfortable booking prior to tasting.

We will be doing our tasting the last week of January for our wedding in May.
