Booking a planner

I am getting married on 10-17-2020 and I have booked mine already. She was the first and only one I interviewed. I was worried someone else would book her because October weddings are popular in my area. I don’t think there is a wrong time to book them.

I am getting married in May 2020 and booked mine in February 2019. She and her partner only do 2 weddings a month each and they are PHENOMENAL so I wanted to make sure she was free!

If you want a full service planner, hiring them before you start your planning process would be a good idea. (As you're paying them to plan your wedding.)

This. If you're actually using them as a planner, hire them ASAP so you can take advantage of them as much as possible. If you're just using them as a coordinator you can stand to wait a bit, but I'd still recommend hiring someone sooner rather than later - even though our coordinator isn't really helping us plan, she has a list of recommended vendors that's been helpful.
