Blended families: names on invitations

MzRosaLu, on November 29, 2015 at 12:23 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

How would you address an invitation in the following situation? FSIL and her partner live together and each have kids from previous relationships. Her kids have their dad's last name. So there are 3 last names involved. Would it be appropriate to write (for example): John Smith, Jane Doe and family? I want to make it clear that their kids are also invited. Thanks!

    Yes it would seem appropriate.

MzRosaLu, that's exactly how I would address their invitation.

I would write what you have: John Smith, Jane Doe, and Family.

    I just did this!

It was a little different since it was the mom of the group that was the "main" invite, since it's FH step sister. So outside it read: Ms. Jane Doe and Family, Inside: Jane Doe, John Smith, Kid 1, Kid 2 (kids names were first names only)

It's a little different than the other way it was suggested. However, it still did the trick.

How do your RSVP cards look like? If the number of guests is stated on your RSVP card, like "X many seats have been reserved in your honour" or "___ of X will be attending" then just do Jane Doe, John Smith and family. If not, then you need to name them like PWP did, so that they know how many seats they were given.

@VC, our RSVP cards will indicate number of seats. You're right, if not for that, I would need to label an inner envelope like @PWP suggested. Thanks for the input, everyone!
