Black Bridesmaid Dresses?!

Alexa, on August 24, 2018 at 3:32 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 39
We’re planning a June 1st wedding in Pennsylvania. The ceremony will be outside around 4pm & reception inside with air conditioning. I want a short ceremony around 20-25 minutes.

Our colors are lots of natural greenery & black & white. All that green color will come from plants & ivy. Our ceremony area is gorgeous and covered in greenery. I keep second guessing that black part though simply because of the season we choose. I love the color the black. I find it classic and sleek. Even my engagement ring has a salt and pepper diamond. I want black bridesmaid dresses & black dress shirts for the guys. (No tuxes here- we’re keeping it simple) I just don’t want them to be too hot even though the ceremony area is shaded by trees or people think I’m crazy for having a late spring wedding with black dresses/dress shirts. My FH is wearing light grey & I am planning on wearing just a simple white dress that isn’t actually a wedding dress. (After hours and hours of looking at dresses I came to the conclusion wedding dresses aren’t my thing) I attached a picture of the dresses I’m looking at for the bridesmaids. None of them have said a bad thing about it and the dress options are flowy & mostly sleeveless or short sleeve. However my grandmother did make the comment it’s a wedding not a funeral. I personally don’t associate black with being depressing, but I know a lot of people do.

Any thoughts? I don’t want a crazy colorful wedding & I don’t want them wearing green since I want all the green to be natural elements. Also since FH is wearing grey I don’t really want grey bridesmaid dresses either.

My first wedding was the last week of May and I had black dresses (with a little bit of champagne colored stitching). Flowers were ivory roses with everything else greenery. I totally understand the look you are going for and think it will be lovely!

My daughter’s wedding last month had the BM’s in long black gowns that had a slit and spaghetti straps. The guys wore black tuxes. I wore a black long gown with ivory beaded cowl neck. Flowers were pink. It looked awesome!

Thank you! I’m kind of relived to hear other people have had dark dresses for spring/summer weddings too. Anytime I search for things to create an inspiration board black never seems to come up.

Black BM dresses are very classy! My sister wore a burgundy wedding dress 10 years ago, and BMs wore black before all this color trend and the look was striking. Thumbs up for black BM dresses! 👍

I was in a wedding with black bridesmaids dresses. I had absolutely no issues with it! I think it can look very classy. As long as you make sure your BP has breathable fabric just in case it is unseasonably warm, go for it!

Sorry black dresses are so drab to me for weddings, especially long ones. And in June.

I was a maid of honor for my friend last year and wore black. I loved it because it’s a flattering color, and it fit in with their black/gold theme. I love the idea of black, white, and tons of greenery!

I don’t think black is a problem. They have all these “appropriate colors” for seasons but I say do what you want lol. My only concern if it were me would be if they’d be hot in black. I know where I live July is HOT and humid despite shade lolol

I think black as a color is fine and I think they should be fine temperature wise. Early June can sometimes still be on the cooler side. Are you doing photos outside? That may be something to consider is limiting BP outside photos and try to do some inside. That way it's still just an hour or so of being out side.

I love those dresses and I think that style is great for June. I am having a November wedding with black bridesmaid dresses. Agreed, it isn't a depressing color. It is classic. I think them wearing black with your groom in grey will look like a great combo and the greenery will be a great accent for the black.
