Biotin - worth it?

Private_User832, on September 12, 2016 at 3:06 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 38

Have you tried biotin and if so what did you think? Did you notice an improvement in your hair and nails? Now that I'm engaged people are looking at my hands all the time and my nails are really brittle so they break all the time. I'm also trying to grow my hair out for the wedding so just curious if it is worth a try

It makes some people break out, so beware.

A good prenatal can do essentially the same thing.

I tried it for about six months but didn't see any results in my hair or nails.

I agree with @mna - just get a prenatal vitamin.

I started biotin about 2 months ago and I feel my hair has grown twice as fast in that time than it normally has. I can't speak for the nails because I have always had strong ones. I was worried that body hair would also grow faster, but I haven't noticed that.

I tried it for a few months and didnt really see any results. I did hear that it can make you break out. Just do some prenatal vitamins.

I've been taking it on and off for about a year. It stops me from losing too much hair and it makes my nails harder but I haven't noticed either growing faster

It has worked very well for me but I suppose it just depends on the person

I take it daily 10000mcg daily for 3 or 4 years. I usually take a month off every 4 or 5 months (someone told me this helps the body from getting accustomed to the dose.. no idea if thats true).

My hair grows about 0.25inch per week. Thats an inch per month. However, because it speeds up the growth cycle, I also find that I shed more. It doesn't do much for my nails.

Also, note: if you have prone to any other body hair, biotin doens't discriminate. lol

ETA: also, for diabetics, it could wreck havoc on blood sugar so use with caution - for me, it was worth it

Biotin will help strengthen hair, idk about growing longer. I know that you should drink lots of water in order to keep your hair healthy too

I used Nature's Bounty Hair, Skin, and Nails. I had a bad break-out on my cheeks from it, but once it subsided, my skin was fine. If and when I got a pimple, it was just one under the skin and never came to the surface and it went away with daily face-washing.

I took biotin and it didn't do much for my hair, my nails were super strong though. However it made me breakout like CRAZY! The breakouts were way too bad for me to continue using it.

@MNA do not take a prenatal vitamin if you are not pregnant. It contains too much folate and iron for women who are not pregnant.

I got the worst acne from biotin -- like, the nasty, cystic kind.

I'm taking nature's bounty hair skin and nails vitamin. Yes, it has biotin in it (but it's not solo), and while I haven't noticed crazy hair growth, I have noticed my nails are stronger and longer, and my hair does seem to be growing a bit faster.

Whenever I take it regularly I notice a change in my nails. Not sure about hair cause I always forget to be regular with it. You just reminded me I meant to actually start taking it again today and forgot!

I've taken biotin before and it helped my nails! Also I think the prenatal vitamin thing is a myth- it's the pregnancy hormones that cause the hair growth not the vitamins

I take a multivitamin with biotin in it and it has helped my hair, not my nails.

    Talk to a doctor, though.

@FutureMrsC: Is that why I've always been told by doctors that prenatal a are ideal for ANY woman of child bearing age? Excess folate is water soluble and removed in the urine. Most women have issues with low iron or could benefit from a higher iron intake. Not sure where you got your info, but it goes against everything every medical professional I've ever spoken to has told me for years.

I've also been on prenatal a for years as we have been ttc with zero harm.

@MsKellie: it can take 6 months to tell any difference in nails as that is generally how long it takes the entire nail plate to grow out before the difference can be seen.
