BIKINI WAX....YAY OR NAY?

Linda, on May 26, 2015 at 11:01 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20

Ok Ladies, my wedding is exactly 11 days from today, and the day after the wedding FH and I are flying off to Punta Cana for our honeymoon. So, we will be on the beach or at a pool for 6 days. I have NEVER had a bikini wax, but I am considering it. My question is, with my wedding and honeymoon being so close is it too late to get waxed? You know just in case of skin irritation (since I'm a wax virgin), and I do not want to have my lady parts red, bruised, swollen, or irritated on my wedding day. For you ladies who have done it, how painful is it?

It's a little painful, probably more than a little the first time, but take some pain medicine about 30 minutes before you go and it will help. My suggestion would be to do it about 5 days out. It's definitely not too late. And if you go somewhere that's established for good waxing then you should be fine. I would NOT go to a small nail salon the first time that might be a disaster. If you have a European Wax Center where ever you are, that's a good place. I say do it! I think it's the best thing I've ever done when it comes to beauty care for my lady parts! I'm thinking about getting my legs waxed for my wedding so I don't have to worry about that stuff! Smiley laugh

After my first one, I was fine in less than 4 hours, like I didn't even have it done. I went to a European Wax Center and used the ingrown hair serum religiously after and was fine.

I'm getting mine done on Thursday. I never had any problems with waxing (my first was a brazilian no less). If you get it done within the next few days I think you would be fine. Even if you did have some irritation, it should clear up in a couple days anyway.

Just please, please go to a GOOD waxer. Cheaper is not always better.... don't go to one of those discount nail salons lol If you go to a reputable spa/waxer, you honestly shouldn't have a problem.

ETA: It doesn't tickle - but it's not the worst pain in the world, and it's only while it's happening. Afterwards, any soreness should clear up pretty quick. Pop an ibuprofen before hand, that might help!

It's painful if you haven't experienced it before! Since you're so close to the wedding, I wouldn't risk it. But if you feel like its necessary, take a couple ibuprofen beforehand, and have them do small areas at a time.

I wouldn't do it this soon solely because you may have a bad reaction to the wax. See if you can go early and test it somewhere sensitive but inconspicuous.

The pain is nothing, and it definitely shouldn't be bruised, but I've had reactions to cheap wax. Go to a quality salon. No chains.

I have to tell you that I get Brazilian waxes regularly- 10+ years now. They are the BEST. The first time is more of a shock than anything else. Take an ibuprofen before you go. I have sensitive skin and they do not bother me at all. Everyone is different though.

I would do it about a week before your date. Take some ibuprofen before your appointment, it will hour a little the first time but after that you'll be fine. Go to a professional!

I'm an esthetician and I body wax for a living. It is definitely not too late to get one done!!

It would be best to do your wax about 5 days out to make it last through the honeymoon. Your hair comes in in different growth cycles and when you shave it is harder for your hairs to be on same cycle. If I have a shaver who is doing a first time wax, I tell them upfront that it will take a few wax sessions for all the hairs to catch up and for the wax to last. Hair coming in 2 weeks later is somewhat normal for a first timer.

Honestly, it will hurt a little, but its an instant thing....then it goes away. A basic bikini wax really only takes about 15-20 mins and will clean up anything that is sticking out of a bathing suit. It may take a little longer if you want more hair removed and the closer you get to your lady parts, the more sensitive it will be. Upper thigh area is no big deal and won't hurt much. Follow the aftercare instructions you are given and you should be fine. PLEASE DO NOT GO TO A CRAPPY NAIL SALON FOR YOUR BIKINI WAX (or any wax for that matter....GROSS!).

What @FutureMrsJohnson- start with a basic Bikini wax first. although i didn't and i just went straight for the Bikini full, just go somewhere that has really good reviews and waxing is one of their specific services. i would let them know that it's your first time, they may have some suggestions.

i dont think that its too close to your wedding, my hair would start growing back in around your wedding day if i did it today. i personally haven't had a reaction to wax / or get burned (my main concern)

(i go to european wax centers and have had a good experience at the one i go to)

The first time will hurt a little bit because your hair follicles are strong. So it shouldn't really matter what kind of bikini wax you get. (The week leading up to that time of the month is also worse than other weeks because of the increased blood flow I was told.) I'd recommend going to European Wax Centers as they don't use strips, which I find to be more gentle on your skin (and easier for beginners!). They also have products that will help with the after and will answer any questions you have. They also do a complimentary wax (upper lip or underarms, I believe), so you could try that first. They also take walk ins. Smiley smile

I did a very long post about this after my experience before my wedding. It's not too late and as far as pain I was fine that same day. The downsize is that you waited too long. Like other posters have said the hair cycle will be an issue. I got waxed Saturday my wedding was the following Friday we left for honeymoon Sunday. By the wedding I could feel little hairs here and there because those hairs were coming in. It sucked. I ended up shaving a couple times on the honeymoon. I was really bummed out about it.

I had mine done 3 days before my boudoir shoot and I was fine. It was my first time getting it done. It lasted about 2 weeks. They said after the third time, it'll start lasting longer.

I went to European Wax Center the Tuesday before. Mostly because I didn't want to deal with shaving and whatnot at the honeymoon. It hurt at the time, but I was fine by the time I finished my smoothie right after my appointment. I thought it was worth it not to bother with razors on the honeymoon.

@ Kristen that is exactly what I am worried about. I do not want to have to worry about shaving during my honeymoon.

Have you considered laser hair removal? The first and only time I had a bikini wax it hurt as hell all day long and the next day, though it was a very small place so probably they weren't the best. Downside was that the hair was back a bit over a week later. After that I switched to laser hair removal, and for some reason that hurt me less, AND it lasts me about three weeks.

I think the real question is the last time you shaved is dependent on if it's too soon. The hair has to be long enough to stick too.

I would also vote for European wax center. I've been to a bunch of good waxers, but their hard wax is the best! Make sure anywhere you go uses a new swab every time they dip in the wax. The cheaper places will reuse the same stick, which is the same wax they use with the next person. They should dip and toss the stick as soon as it's touched you.

The only part that I find really painful is the top middle part where the hair is the thickest. The sides are no stress! And it's so nice after! And I have sensitive skin and have no issues. a little redness after but that's it. You could also start with bikini and keep going depending on how you feel.

The place I went to said to make sure your hair is about the length of a grain of rice or it won't work well.

I got a Brazilian and leg wax the Tuesday before my Friday wedding. It was the first time doing either of those, although I have gotten my eyebrows waxed regularly. The leg wax was fine, but the Brazilian was miserable. It hurt like hell and my skin was left very red and irritated. It took a day or two for my skin to recover, but after that is was nice how long the wax lasted. Lasted about a week and a half for the Brazilian because of the growth cycles. My legs are still smooth two weeks later. I would recommend doing it a few days before you leave to give your skin time to recover if you have a bad reaction.

    Wait.

People still go the traditional route and have pubic hair?!

I shave EVERYTHING. However I am thinking about growing getting a Brazilian wax for the wedding. Back in the day when I had hair down there I use to wax a huge portion of it, it hurt the first couple of times and some spots even bled due to the roots being so deep, however everyone has different experiences. Over time I found it more convenient to just shave. I personally wouldn't wax at this point since you've never had it done before. This is something I would suggest having tried months in advance.
