Big band music for reception

Yourlilfig, on July 22, 2016 at 3:01 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 7

FH and I really enjoy big band, swing type music and we were thinking about having our DJ play it at our reception. What do you guys think? Will guests hate it? Do you think people will dance? We don't want guests to be bored, but I just can't tolerate a lot of more modern music. ETA-Clarified things. Sorry

I would love it but I can't say everyone would. Maybe get your dj to play some mixed in with other genres.

Wait, your wedding is in two weeks?!

We have a DJ haha. Booked her last May. She called to talk about what music we would like and other details and to be honest we hadn't given it much thought. I just very strongly dislike modern pop, rap, and R&B. FH feels similarly. We both love Jazz and Big Band. I'm more of a punk, emo, rock kind of person, but that doesn't really scream wedding haha. We just need to call her back and tell her what we want to hear.

My friends had a swing band for their wedding. I loved the music and was entertained but hardly anyone but her lindy club friends danced. No one else was comfortable enough.

I love Big Band Music - when I read your post, I thought you were looking into getting a band.

I agree with PP, have your dj do a mix that way everyone will have a great time - Remember is all about being a great host.

I don't think everyone would be hitting the dance floor of there's only big band music playing. We gave a list to our DJ of must plays, and do not plays along with a list of bands we really liked. He did an excellent job with the music. Give your DJ a little freedom and they'll get people up and moving! I didn't like half of the music, but I was too busy socializing and having fun to care.

I think a few well chosen selections would be good. I'd stick with songs that most people will know -- even if they don't know them by title, they'll know them by tune. "In the Mood" and "Sing Sing Sing" make it hard for anyone to remain seated. Slowing it down, "Moonlight Serenade" would get the slow dancers up. I wouldn't overload the playlist with BB and Swing. Diversity keeps the generations happy. My dad is a huge Big Band fan, so I can still remember some of the stuff he'd play around the house.

Are you using a DJ or are you using a computerized system with speakers? You've got to get the playlist done -- you're in crunch time.

We love Big Band and swing dancing too!! We entered our reception to Sing Sing Sing, but besides that we did some swing and hustle to some more modern music. This way other people could dance and not necessarily swing or hustle.

I think if you pick a couple of songs and sprinkle them in, that would probably be ok.

But most importantly, you know your crowd best. Would they enjoy dancing to big band music?
