Beverage count

Vanessa, on April 5, 2016 at 5:16 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

We have the option of supplying our own beer and wine or letting the caterer handle it for a set price per person. Based on some online calculators I'm supposed to assume about 1 drink per person per hour. Is this a good estimate? My fiances friends are all from the midwest and are partiers! should I assume they'll have more than 1 per hour or will the drink orders decrease as the night moves along?

I would assume more, but thats just me. My husband and I also supplied the alcohol for our wedding. Talk to someone knowledgeable at the liquor store, they can really give you some solid advice. How many guests do you have?

There are tons of links out there if you google how to estimate alcohol count for a wedding. The one we used was

We're looking at about 120 guests give or take. 50% are coming from out of town and will be staying at a hotel. We're assumine they'll be throwing them back. The others live close enough to cab/uber to and from the venue. The caterer gave us a price of $17 per person for a hosted bar. We're trying to figure out if it's better to let them deal with it or try to save money by supplying the alcohol and just hiring their bartender

Hi Vanessa, welcome to WW! Make sure to upload a picture for your avatar (instead of the default icons) so that we can get to know you and tell you apart from all the other posters. You can do this on a desktop computer under My Settings and Profile and Privacy Settings.

To be safe I'd estimate 2 drinks per person per hour, or more if you know your guests like to party Smiley smile Also check out your state laws - there are some places where if you buy booze in bulk you can return the unopened alcohol!

I'd go with the $17 per person personally. That's not a bad price at all to let someone else figure it out, transport the alcohol, make sure you don't run out, etc. etc. etc.

I thought 2 drinks per person for the first hour then one per after that?

I found one that said 2 per person the first hour and then 1 per hour after. This is supposed to equal the light with the heavy. I am using every adult in my count for the numbers even if I know they really don't drink. I then added in a few more cases to get a little bit more coverage.

Ok I'll go with 2 pp for the 1st hour and 1 pp for the remaining 4 and double up for the big drinkers. Thanks for all of your help!

I read 2 drinks for the first hour and 1 for every hour after that. That's an estimate, but I think you need to use your own judgement for how much people will drink. If you're buying your own drinks, it's better to overestimate. If you have extra leftover, who cares? You can always drink it some other time.

That formula really helps put the alcohol in realistic numbers!! Thx, I'm buying wine every time I go to the store to ease the final bill. I have more shopping to do!!

I think I would pay the 17 per person to have stress free and let someone else figure out how much you need

If you search, there was a thread a few months back where users put how much alcohol they bought and how much of each type was used. I think it was a thread started by Pancakes and would probably be useful for you. I'm on mobile, otherwise I'd search for it.
