Belts and shoes for groomsmen - should they match?

Emily, on September 1, 2018 at 5:31 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 5

Maybe I'm focusing too much on the details, but should I worry about what shoes and belts the groomsmen wear? The beautiful off-white cream linen pants/ vests that we've purchased for the groomsmen (about $200 for each set) look just beautiful with a brown belt. My fiance has beautiful brown leather shoes we got in Italy that he would like to wear. But two of the groomsmen only have black dress shoes. One of those two has a pair of buntstones they're willing to shine up.

So... the question: Do I get brown belts for all the groomsmen and not worry about what shoes they're wearing, with the result that one or two of them will likely be wearing black shoes in the photos? Do I get brown belts for the ones with brown shoes, and black belts for those with black shoes so they match belt to shoes, and not worry about them matching as a party?

I'm not really comfortable asking them to buy new shoes so they can match each other - one is a new dad and only works seasonally so doesn't have a ton of extra spending money.

Typically it is a stone cold rule that belts match the shoes but I totally am with you on not wanting to ask them to spend more money on new shoes. Maybe just let the guys with black shoes wear black belts?

When it comes down to it the pictures will all look good and most likely very few people will actually notice the difference.

We had a groomsman have a suit mishap and had to buy a completely new suit from a different store . It matched pretty well, but not perfectly. And guess what. No one noticed. I even forgot about his suit/didn't notice until halfway through pictures when I was noting how good all the boys looked!

Just like it's ok to ask bridesmaids to wear shoes on a certain color family as long as they can wear whatever style works best for them, it's ok to ask the groomsmen to wear brown shoes. I would buy the belts for them though if the coordinating belts are important to you, otherwise a simple choose brown shoes and a brown belt that works for you is ok

Hi Emily! Agreeing with Kristen, I think it's usually a given that shoes match belts. So, potentially letting them stick with black might be the best option for all the groomsmen to be cohesive without requiring them to pay for new shoes/belts & aren't covering any payments on these attire items either. I don't think it would clash if the groom wore his brown shoes, as the groomsmen would all still match each other.

Unless you'd want to cover payment on all of their brown belts so that just this one groomsmen only has to worry about finding brown shoes, like Mim said.

It's really up to you and justifiable to ask, either way.

    Shoes need to match.

You're not asking of too much of them.

I know that you feel as though you are but don't worry about it.

    Enjoy your day!

All of ours are matching. We used Generation Tux, so they could get everything at once and they would all match
