Beer & wine reception.

Jessica, on May 6, 2014 at 2:50 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

So we have decided to have a beer and wine reception. I HATE HATE HATE beer!!! so my beer question is super duper easy. should I get a keg? or cans? I think a keg is easier. but I have no idea how much you get out of it.

my wine question. I am not really a big wine drinker. I like some. and most mixed with like 7 up to have like a wine cooler taste. any good wine suggestions?? then would it be weird to have wine coolers too? or those cans of margaritas? they have them at walmart for 10 for $10 so those are pretty cheap. and I love wine coolers! I will not be drinking a ton though since I want to remember my day.

If most your guests drink the same type beer a keg can be good, but if you are DYI be prepared to keep it cold. If cans I'd do miller lite, bud light, yuengling and maybe corona. For wine : chardonnay, cabernet, rose

Red wine: Malbec or Shiraz - both are light and fit a wide spectrum of red drinkers

White wine: Sav. Blanc or Pinot Gris- both are middle of the road wines, not too sweet not too dry.

Beer- I personally would go with cans or bottles and provide a glass if people want. Go with a light beer to suite most people's preferences.

You could have coolers too. I don't think it hurts. Your bar is basically just no mixed drinks.

Keg might be easiest - if people are beer drinkers they'll drink whatever you get in the keg. Allison's suggestions for cans/bottles are good, too.

I think just different options of white and red - I'm not a huge wine drinker but I tend to like sweeter wine like moscato.

I'd go with cans or bottles over a keg, because you can keep whatever's left over. Even if you don't drink it, your husband might, or you can serve it to guests.

    I think coolers are fine.

I am having beer and wine (I did add a signature drink recently though) but we are having 3 different types of bottled beer, and 3 white wines and 1 red. Normally you would have 50-50 just so your guests have a variety but the type of food we are serving doesn't go well with reds.

I would not recommend a keg unless you have a large guest list. Anything that is not used up goes to waste, which is a little sad. Are you doing the drinks all yourself, but have a caterer? Or is it all DIY? We are getting event insurance through my parents' home owner's insurance and they're requiring special permissions for a keg, but not regular beer - so that was another reason we decided not to go with a keg. If you have a caterer, that shouldn't be a problem. You could also do a 'pony keg', aka a 'half keg', and just have 2 of the same beer, so if you only use up one the other won't be wasted.

What do your friends/family like to drink? We're having a beer and wine reception and are choosing nice beer (in bottles) because we know most of our crowd likes good beer. I think we'll have two choices - a porter, and an IPA or maybe a lager. We're going with local brands (because Oregon has some pretty yummy beer). However, I'm one of the few people who love wine in the group. This means we can be pretty cheap on the wine, since we don't have to please as many people. Since it's a casual wedding, we're going to do Bota boxes (a brand of boxed wine that doesn't taste like vinegar) for the red wine and bottles of something...maybe chardonnay, or pinot grigio, for the white (in bottles, so they can be stuck in ice). Red wines that are crowd pleasers are cabernet sauvingon, and probably most American red blends (which are often mostly cabernet/merlot).

I'm not personally a fan of wine coolers, etc. but if your family and friends like them, then I'm sure they'd love to see them there! Also, we had considered doing margaritas, but we were just going to make our own mix in a big dispenser, so people don't mix their own and use up the tequila before the other ingredients. I make a pretty yummy margarita from scratch...

If you're trying to keep things simple, though, I would suggest:

1-2 beer options, of different types that are crowd pleasers (for your group)

2 wine options - one red, one white

and then just non-alcoholic options - lemonade, punch, whatever tastes good (and water)

And don't forget ice, which you'll need for everything but the red wine.

    Good luck!

I debated between a keg and cans/bottles. I opted to do cans/bottles because you can get more of a variety and you can keep the leftovers (or someone can) as others have mentioned. I also didn't want my wedding to look like a kegger. If you do keg I would go with bud/miller/Coors light (ask a beer drinker what they prefer, or a few). If you do bottles/cans I would do mostly these but also add in Corona, Shocktop or Blue Moon, I really like Hard Ciders as do a few of my guests so I will be adding those. I will also do a small selection of N/A beers. I also like the idea of doing a Summer Shandy.

I'd check with your venue--we're doing a keg because the venue charges $300 for clean-up if you bring in individual cans or bottles

I am dnot having a caterer. but we have to find a bartender. so for those using cans orbkttles are you having the bartender pour them into a cup?? we are doing the clean up after the wedding, yeah sucks!! I dont want to be cleaning up cans and bottles everywhere. I still have awhile. I was just gonna jot some wines down to taste test them. one bottle a week...lol!
