Beer and cider only for outdoor wedding?

Kathleen, on March 25, 2015 at 8:35 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

We are getting married in a local park that overlooks the town (beautiful views). The wedding is a Sunday noon outdoor wedding so that my 4 year old can enjoy the entire day. We are going with a local, rustic chic vibe - the food and favors will be local, we are using the on-site picnic tables, etc. The musician is a local classical guitarist and instead of dancing/DJ, I'm collecting outdoor games (giant Jenga, horseshoes, etc). Children are welcome and mixed in with the adults - I'm hiring a babysitter to help out.

Now that you have an idea of how the day will look, my question is: will it be acceptable to only have local microbrews and ciders but no wine? We definitely won't have liquor - it's not our style. And, since it's outdoors and the catering company doesn't cover alcohol, I would have to rent/buy wine glasses. It's so much easier to have a huge wheelbarrow with ice and bottled beer/cider/hard lemonade, and I think fits our theme better.

Your thoughts?

I think you'll be OK without wine. Just make sure you have soda and water available too Smiley smile

I'd prefer wine, only because I don't drink beer or cider (too heavy). But, there's nothing wrong with just beer/cider. I would make sure your venue allows glass bottles, though, since some parks and outside areas do not.

I don't think people would care about fancy wine glasses, though, if that's your only concern. You could use small plastic cups and be fine, and only the white would need to be on ice. I have been to plenty of weddings where wine was served in plastic cups (not solo cups, but the smaller, clear plastic ones)

Your plan sounds good! Just have some soda or something available too. You're not gonna please everybody no matter what you do, so just do what's best for you and what you think most of your guests will like.

There are lighter ciders out there, you will just have to do taste testing Smiley winking

May be a few pitchers of Sangria?

For not as sugary ciders, I recommend Ace and Johnny something. I love cider!

Make sure that you don't need any additional permits. Lots of times to have alcohol in public spaces you not only need additional permits, but you have to buy liability insurance. That's the reason we changed our plans.

If you did the glass serving jars of sangria (the ones with the little spout), and had the little clear plastic cups, like mentioned above, you could get away with that easily, and for very little added cost. Especially in the summer, outdoors, sangria is a big hit, and lighter than a red wine. You can also do one red and one white sangria (that's what I'm doing for our rehearsal, along with beer), and that covers all bases. Or you could just choose a lighter beer or cider. Up to you!

Personally, I don't like beer, cider, nor lemonade lol I do love wine, though, and I think anyone who prefers wine would tell you that they would much rather have it in mason jars or plastic cups than none at all. Sangria's a great idea! I would definitely be super bummed to show up at a wedding and not be able to drink anything -- I would warn guests about it in advance if you're going the beer and cider only route.

It's fine but you could get the 4 packs of wines or wine coolers. I drink wine but if I was at a wedding like yours (which sounds great by the way) I'd drink beer!

Johnny Appleseed. Ikea has SUPER cheap wine glasses you can always resell after your wedding, I don't think not having wine glasses is a very good reason IMO
