Bedazzle a wedding gown??

Michele, on January 8, 2015 at 1:49 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 18

Has anyone "bedazzled" their wedding dress?

I found a dress that I love. I love how I feel and look in it. It's been purchased and I have it in my closet. My problem with it is there is not enough sparkle on it. It is very beaded but with clear Round beads not rhinestones. I want to add rhinestones to it to give it a diamond sparkle but feel guilty because the dress was pretty expensive. I am having second thoughts about the dress because it doesn't have the sparkle I want. Has anyone added rhinestones to their gown?

Don't do it! Instead, get some super sparkly accessories-- a belt, necklace, earrings, bracelet-- whatever you need to get the sparkle you want.

I would second Barbara--get a blinged-out belt, big bling earrings, statement necklace, or something else. Do you have a picture of the dress?

A belt wouldn't be enough. I want sparkle all over mainly at the bust area.

For some reason there's no place to add a picture to the comments here. Here's a couple sample links. If you can't click on them copy and paste.

I agree about not attempting it yourself, unless you have experience in sewing and garment design. The dress looks like it follows a symmetrical pattern for the beading, and I personally wouldn't know where to start adding that sparkle, but a seamstress or dress designer probably would. I'd definitely ask a professional.

You really should take it to a professional.

What about a capelet or topper/cover-up with sparkle beading?

    These are both from BHLDN.

Please, just don't bedazzle your gown. It is gorgeous as it is.

Ive bedazzled expensive corsets before for stage use and it all came out fine. best bet is to take some beads or crystals (whatever you want to add to your dress) and practice on a piece of fabric similar to the fabric your dress is made out of. use different sewing or gluing techniques until you are satisfied with how it comes out, then go for the dress.

Agree with everyone else. If you want to make changes talk to a professional, but try jewelry or a beaded belt first.

I agree that the dress is gorgeous as is but it doesn't have the sparkle that I like. I like diamond sparkle not beaded sparkle. I'll talk to the person putting the corset back in and see if she can do it. If Pnina wasn't so dang pricey I would've gotten one of hers because she makes what I love!

This is the diamond sparkle I like:

The dress you have has a very specific look, and I am having trouble translating that into the last link. I would agree that you should either ask someone who can see it in person, or else test the bling very carefully without actually gluing or sewing anything.

I think you should have gotten a different dress than if that's what you were looking for. I do think a blinged belt would look good. Maybe more bling on a jewelry and a headband as well

That's more than adding some rhinestones. That is a ton of crystals. I personally would not even attempt to do it myself. And I think if you have a pro do it, it's gonna end up costing you a ton.

Another thing I've read is to use a fabric safe glitter spray. That would work to achieve the glitter effect of the second link. I'm not trying to replicate these images by any means, I'm just saying that those are the types of sparkle I like. I would never put enough crystals on the dress to make it look like that second link. My dress is very symmetrical so I think adding some rhinestones here and there would be easy. I don't want it covered just blingy. More so up top and do an ombré effect into the skirt so that it gradually minimizes the amount of rhinestones if that makes sense. I was showing those pictures as a reference for the sparkle I like not the amount of rhinestones. I'll talk to the person who will be doing alterations.

I might just do a couple on the bodice, add a rhinestone belt and call it a day. I will have a blingy necklace and headband too so that will help.

    Thanks for all your input!

Just as a heads up: glitter spray may be okay for fabric, but it's going to ruin the clear beads that are already attached to the dress. Definitely DO NOT go this route.

Holy cow! We have the same dress and I feel the same!!! It’s gorgeous but there is not enough bling. I want to put some extreme bling in the corset area. Were you able to do so? What were your results?

I “bedazzled” my daughter’s wedding dress with Swarovski crystals and hand sewn beads. Now she has all the elements she wants from a wedding dress with the sparkle she imagined. Gluing crystals is MUCH easier and less time consuming than sewing beads (and i do not like to hand sew). To be fair, i have blinged a lot of college dance team uniforms and such. If not something you have done before, suggest ordering cheap rhinestones and practice.

Also suggest working from big picture to details. In other words, put X size and style rhinestone in every X location in the lace pattern. Sewed Y beads to every Y location on the dress. And worked the details in across the whole dress, rather than concentrating in one area then moving to next area. Much easier to keep adding than to remove anything.
Using some lace left from alternations, i to lengthened the bodice slightly in the front as well as bit down the back so there is interest and so waistline was not just straight across. Plan to scatter tiny crystals on the chiffon down the back of the dress, which is slightly scary. Not saying everyone works that way. This is only wedding dress i ever done.
Order crystals is bulk online. If not familiar with sizes, look up a stone size chart; and however many crystals you think you will need, triple it.
Professionals warn that over time, glue may discolor & ruin the dress. Not sure how long that takes. Some of the dance uniforms are 15-20 yrs old. i was willing to purchase a more expensive dress for her but she said she liked this one; handed it to me and said “bedazzle it to look like me.” The bridal consultant almost croaked. My daughter hasn’t seen the progress in awhile but so far she loves it. $500 dress; $150 in crystals & beads; and LOTS of time. Because of CoronaVirus, the May 2020 wedding is now postponed until May 2021. Once that decision was made, i stopped working on it. Will pick it back up in February or March 2021, when it seems like there really will be a wedding.

    Hello,

I have a question about the technique you used to bedazzle your daughter's dress. Are you using fabric glue and what are you using underneath the dress so it doesn't bleed through?
    Thanks in advance!
