Bed Bath and Beyond WARNING!

Cathasach, on August 3, 2010 at 6:20 PM Posted in Planning 0 24

Hey all. I just wanted to give you a heads up on an issue the husband and I are facing. Because we live in NYC and everything is small space living (unless your rich) we opted to do gift cards for our wedding shower and even encouraged people to do the same for the wedding since we got married in Texas. Well, now we've reached a hiccup in the system. We wanted to get new pots and pans with our gift cards so to make it easy we went to order them online because we don't have a car and it's too big to carry via public transportation. Guess what? The website ONLY ALLOWS two gift cards on a purchase and because all of our cards are in amounts of $50 or less and the pots and pans are $250, that only covers $100 and we have to come up with the rest PLUS shipping and handling. I DON'T THINK SO! Not when I have over $600 in gift cards! So I went to the store to consolidate them. Guess what? THEY DON'T DO THAT EITHER! So now we're having to bribe a friend to get them home.

Oh wow. I am so sorry you ran into that hiccup. That can be very frusterating. Bed Bath & Beyond didn't last long here in our Mall, the manager said the company was going bankrupt. I didn't know there were any remaining after that. I hope you get things squared away.

I sent a nasty email a couple weeks ago over the ordering mishap. I'm not looking up a phone number to complain about the consolidation crap. That just sounds like BULL#$&! to me.

Thanks for the info. I had no idea (although FH and I don't have to worry because we live in OH and don't have that type of problem) I like to order stuff on line.

I have a solution for you though. You can purchase gift cards with other gift cards on line. so you take $25's and make a $50, two $50's to make $100, and two $100 to make $200. I know it's annoying and a lot of effort, but it can be done (I just tried :-D ). Then you can use two $200's to get you stuff. :-D

I still think that is bull and if I were you I would call corporate and they might combine the gift card(s) for you (at least to $200s - some companies have a maximum gift card tender policy). If they say they cant, then you tell them that you are posting your problems here and have changed a whole website full of women from registering there and switching to JCP or the like. That will change their mind quicker. And just keep asking for supervisors.

Thanks Jessie! That is helpful and will be tedious (with 21 gift cards) but may be my final option. I tried to do that in the store and they wouldn't let me. Jerks.

JUST CALLED THE GIFT CARD HOTLINE AND THE STUPID STORE PEOPLE (including the Manager) LIED TO ME! THEY CAN CONSOLIDATE YOUR CARDS. Effing jerks. They probably saw my stack and were like "umm, no."

NP. I know that is irritating, but it is a solution, seems better than the alternatives, and the gift card shipping is free. If you don't mind, I have another solution for you, maybe. How much $ total did you get for BB&B? I have an idea.

That there says you can put up to $1000 on one, so if you can't get the store to consolidate them, then I would call/write this department. Then you just say you are giving away and $800 gift card as a raffle for some random thing and need one with that much on it and have all of these cards to combine :-D

Again, not a perfect solution, but a solution none the less.

Perhaps you could go to a different BB&B, or you could mail them to someone you trust, like mom, and have her do it at the one back home. Sorry you are having all of these problems!!

That really stinks and I could not imagine that you couldn't use more than 2. I think Jessi Lyn's idea is GREAT.

BBB and Buy Buy Baby are sister stores, and just a thought...Buy Buy Baby lets your order "online only" items at the store via phone, and they ship it free to your house. BBB might do that to (they're owned by the same company).

I didn't relate that info to the topic lol- it's been a long day! You could use multiple gift cards in-store and order your item shipped to your house this way.

FH and I got about $350 in gift cards--all different denominations and did not have any problem using them all at once in the store.
