Barn wedding w/o "rustic-chic".. Any ideas?

Private User, on February 2, 2013 at 8:03 PM Posted in Planning 0 25

Hi all Smiley smile

Hoping to have my reception at a Civil War era barn in Gettysburg, Pa....

I do not like the "rustic-chic" trend at all (burlap, lace, jars, sunflowers, tree stumps, you know)

Would love to hear any creative ideas for a theme/style and decor that aren't that?

Love this theme! One idea I would love to do is the "redneck wine glass" Basicslly it's a mason jar with a fancy candle stick attached for the stem of the glass.

Google it, you could use it as a centerpiece even have everyone use as their glass for drinks. You can buy or there are tutorials for DIY.

I would post a pic but on my phone.

    Happy planning!

Ashlee - when I think barn wedding, I think rustic chic. I think the two just go hand in hand. What kind of theme were you hoping to go for? It would be easier to provide some insight if I knew what you were hoping for.

Ladies, the OP does not want to use mason jars/anything rustic chic. Her post says that she doesn't like it. She is looking for other ideas.

Are you trying to have a theme? Can you do something more to the civil war era itself, which might lend itself to a more formal look rather than barn-rustic.

Not all barns in this area look rustic.

Thank you for the idea, but I am actually hoping for ideas that steer away from the farm, redneck, and rustic themes. So like I said in my post its a civil war farm and I am trying for a reception without rustic chic decor.. I will share the redneck wine glass idea with someone I know who is going that route though! Thank you!

Try googling "classy barn reception" under images. It brings up some really beautiful pictures. Beautiful overhead lighting, crisp white linens, wrought iron sconces, a lot of roses, silk streamers. You don't have to go rustic just because you're in a barn!

I'm having my wedding in a old stable, & it's very much going to be rustic/sheek style. We are doing the redneck mason jars for our toasting glasses, but our cake is very sheek, bouqets will be burlap with tiny pearls in the flowers, & a little bit of tulle. Not all rustic cause I'm not that country but with a touch of sheek style

This wedding is a beautiful example of a non-farm themed barn wedding...

@MrsC good point.. I could look for some Victorian era ideas and go with that, making it more elegant. FH made a joke just now and said our colors should be Blue and Gray...

Oh my bad tough one here. What are you and FH background. Our original venue was mountain rustic and I was steering away from the same theme because my dress didn't fit so I was doing a art bohemian/ Asian feel. Very colorful bold colors and incorporating the origami cranes. I have Asian roots and the bohemian style was something me and FH can relate too.

Hi Ashlee! My wedding is in an old barn too and I'm not using any of the traditional rustic stuff either. I don't have a theme per say, but my vision is sort of sparkly neutrals (gold, ivory, and charcoal are my colors) - it looks more vintage than rustic. I'm doing lots of candles and big, simple flower arrangements and I'm making my own mercury glass vases. I'm on my phone but I will post my inspiration pics when I can get on my computer

You could use old floral table cloths, lace and milk glass vases with flowers in them. Pearls etc. victorian theme. How aboue old valentine cards? Depression glass.

I think if you want to keep it formal, looking up the customs and things of the civil war era is ideal. At least in books, it sounds very romantic with all the gentility etc. What does your venue have that you could use to play up?

Well first of all, my fiance and I were engaged in Gettysburg. We love it there Smiley smile. Actually, our plan B (if everything falls apart) is to get married at a Bed and Breakfast there.

If you guys are interested in the civil war, you could do a straight up civil war themed wedding. Like, dress up and everything. I don't think that's what you want though.

Or you guys could do a Victorian themed wedding. I mean, it would probably involve a few rustic ideas, but not necessarily country rustic with burlap, tree stumps and boots. More of an old-time feel than country. The mustache thing is sort of old though.

I don't know if you are going to just be in a barn, but you could do a festival theme. Either a music festival, or carnival, or something along those lines. It would work better if you aren't just using a barn, and are using an outside space as well. Unless you want to decorate the heck out of the barn.

There's also a picnic type theme. I personally think that could work in a barn.

I am loving the Victorian themed ideas. It would be easy to do, without going over the top.

Some soft, pastel type fabrics; pearls; lace. It would be very pretty in your venue.

I went to a wedding that was Victorian mansion/barn themed. They used simple flowers and books as center pieces. Then they used old-timey props for the photobooth. They were very much into the mustache thing though.

You may want to google for weddings held at the Fearrington House. it's a barn that was rated by Forbes magazine as the #1 luxury hotel for weddings. Lots of weddings that don't have the typical rustic elements.

Style Me Pretty (the blog) has some really great weddings that happened in barns but are not decorated in that awful, muted rustc-chic country way. (Sorry, I am really over this "vintage rustic" look that just looks like everything faded to me.) Some of the best ones have had lights strung, really nice linens and tables, candles, and have basically treated the barn as a ballroom . . . you don't have to have a weird themed wedding just so that it doesn't feel like a barn.

Just some background info on me and FH. We are both social studies (history) teachers who love rock n roll/alternative. We are very untraditional, edgy, and try to be as unique as possible. We also have a Harley and love BBQ

The venue will hopefully be a b&b near the battlefield that has gardens and also the barn.

I am loving the vintage/victorian ideas with pale colors, sparkles, vases, and lace that you are telling me about. Will have to talk with FH in the morning

Jules I am excited to see your pics

Kelly I have no idea where the moustache trend came from but I have always thought that was weird. Also if you do the b&b which one are you going to use?
