Bar food?

Nisa, on February 12, 2018 at 3:42 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 21
Hey all! The title implies that I'm asking about bar food, but I'm actually inquiring about having a taco bar/nacho bar/Mac and cheese bar, things of that nature. Is anyone doing this for their wedding? Are you having a ton of bars, or just one in addition to your regular food?

FAMIL suggested a taco bar for our wedding. We're planning on having a catered buffet, but thought we could do some kind of bar during the cocktail hour or as a dessert. Thoughts?

If you're good at baking id say to do your own sweets bar so it would be cheaper. Plus alot of goodies can be frozen until the night before so it can be fresh. Taco bar sounds amazing. Personally id do like a nacho kinda bar since you can never go wrong with nachos. Which you can also do yourself and put the nacho cheese in a large crockpot

Heavens, no. Don't even think about doing this yourself.

The issue with a taco bar at cocktail hour is that tacos are messy and usually people are trying to balance a drink and plate while trying to eat. My friend had a Mac n cheese bar and it was a huge hit.

I agree with this, depending on your seating. My friend had pulled pork sandwiches that you could make, which was 100% fine because there was plenty of seating during the cocktail hour, so it wasn't an issue. If that's the case, go for the taco bar, I love it!

If not, I'd strongly suggest taking starsinwaves' advice & do something a little easier to eat.

We are doing some version of a ‘bar’ for a late night snack. Either tacos or chicken and waffles. I have seen people do multiple stations instead of a standard buffet (tacos, mac and cheese, etc).

I think it might be a little weird to have a taco bar in addition to a buffet at the same time. They might compete with each other. I’d either do it as a cocktail hour thing or as a late night thing. Or a dessert bar.

I agree tacos sounds messy. I would rather have traditional passed apps or stations rather than a "bar". I prefer passed apps because I'm trying to drink and mingle during cocktail hour, I don't want to stand in line and/or seek out my food. It's much easier to grab a toothpick or small item from a server while balancing your drink and socializing.

Good point. I'm leaning towards a dessert thing, and just incorporating Mexican food into the buffet, since that's what it seems like my FMIL is after.

Good points. I didn't even think of the messiness, I don't want to make things difficult for people. Pulled pork sounds yummy!

Yep! It'll be just like what Lauren posted but mac n cheese. The also do a mashed potato bar but we figured that would be major carb overload. Lol

We did this for our engagement party, but it was actually at a bar (a craft beer bar that SO and I had our first date at). We had about 15 different types of bar food- so potato skins, quesadillas, nachos. fried pickles and a bunch of different flavors of wings, brought out in rotating shifts by the waitstaff. We also had a few "heavier" options like pasta as well.

We did have seating and utensils for everyone though, so if you want to do "messy" food, make sure you have places for people to sit and enjoy so they don't have to try to maneuver a drink, a plate, a napkin etc while standing.

For dessert we served sheet cake, brownies/ blondies and huge chocolate chip cookies. And open bar of course, lol.

We’re doing a Waffle Bar and a Porchetta Bar - one sweet and one savoury. I think these after-dinner food stations have become a staple at most weddings now, it’s pretty neat! I was so close to booking another venue just for their late night food stations!
