Balloon Release During Ceremony Song

Kathryn, on August 20, 2015 at 5:17 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 12

Sorry, a lot of song questions today. During our ceremony we are doing a balloon release. My dad passed in June and my step sister in 2012. Since my step sister passing, we started writing on balloons for her birthday/mother's day etc. We release the balloons and they go to heaven. Mostly we do it for my 7 year old niece but it is nice for my step mom as well as the rest of us. We will be releasing balloons during our ceremony for my dad and our other loved one who have passed. Before hand we are going to write a little note on them. It is sentimental for us.

I am listening to Pandora and "Spirit In The Sky" by Norman Greenbaum came on. This is a favorite song of mine and it made me think that is was an appropriate song for the balloon release. Is this too weird to play for this since it does talk about death? It is an upbeat song so I felt that it was its saving grace.

When I die and they lay me to rest

Gonna go to the place that's the best

When I lay me down to die

Goin' up to the spirit in the sky

Goin' up to the spirit in the sky

That's where I'm gonna go when I die

When I die and they lay me to rest

Gonna go to the place that's the best

Prepare yourself you know it's a must

Gotta have a friend in Jesus

So you know that when you die

    He's gonna recommend you

To the spirit in the sky

    Gonna recommend you

To the spirit in the sky

That's where you're gonna go when you die

When you die and they lay you to rest

You're gonna go to the place that's the best

Never been a sinner I never sinned

I got a friend in Jesus

So you know that when I die

He's gonna set me up with

    The spirit in the sky

Oh set me up with the spirit in the sky

That's where I'm gonna go when I die

When I die and they lay me to rest

I'm gonna go to the place that's the best

Go to the place that's the best

Oh excellent, thanks ladies. My venue was the one that actually told me to do balloons. This is a very lax venue. She said that one of her couples brought out a civil war cannon and fired it and she was ok with that..... Not sure what they had a cannon for but yeah I guess that makes balloons the least of her worries haha.

I think its a great idea, and I think the song fits perfectly.

But I agree that you should check with your venue. Smiley smile

Please don't think me heartless - by the time I got married, I had zero living parents and grandparents.

    I'm also not a eco-freak.

However, those balloons don't go to heaven. They eventually come back to the ground and become litter either on the ground or in water (depending on where it is). You might want to check with your county that you can legally do that since it's littering.

Unless you can find biodegradable balloons.

If your within 100 miles of the coast they go in the ocean, where all manner of sea life can injest them. Sea turtles die every year from this because they think they're jelly fish. I would suggest floating lanterns instead.

With all the wildfires happening right now I would not use lanterns!

Please do something besides balloons. Even if you're not near the water wildlife often eat them and die. They are also simply horrible pollution besides. I understand what you are trying to do but I think it would be a better tribute to do something that won't hurt the environment and living creatures.

Exactly what E-tex said. Please no doves either, they're breed in captivity. It's like me releasing you into a jungle when you've lived in the city your entire life. No butterflies either, they can bring their own diseases to your local butterflies.

What about a table to honor them instead??

Please don't do a balloon release. Yes, technically balloons biodegrade, but they take a very long time, and ribbon (unless you use raffia) will never break down. Bubbles might be a good way to have a touching moment without harming the environment.
