Balding Bride

Chelsea, on February 28, 2017 at 4:02 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

So I have what's called an Arterial Venous Malformation in my brain - we found it in August and had Gamma Knife Radiation surgery on February 10th to attempt to kill this thing (takes 2-3 years to fully die). Anyway I was promised 100% that I would not lose any hair and I would not have any side effects from this. WRONG! I have been completely numb on my right side for 12 days now, and woke up this morning - 53 days away from my wedding with a good size bald spot on my head - probably a little bigger than a silver dollar. I'm just discouraged. I'm self conscious anyway and just want to look beautiful on my wedding day. I've thought about possibly getting some clip in extensions but they're pretty expensive. I've never used them so I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations? Obviously I neeed them to be able to be curled/styled for the big day.

I am so sorry to hear about this, Chelsea. I hope the Radiation works for you!

did you have your hair trial yet? Either way I would call your hair stylist ASAP and go in so she can see what she can do.

Aw! @OP I am sorry you are going through this... I have no advice except the extensions would be a good idea!

I am sorry to hear this. My suggestion would be to find some extensions, I bought some good quality ones on amazon, and schedule a hair trial with a stylist to see what she can do to work with the extensions.

Sorry to hear about your health issues. My stylist recommend the clip in extensions too while I was trying to grow my hair out after a disastrous cut from another stylist. I decided not to because of the cost. Have you had a hair trial yet? Maybe they can find a way to cover it or hide it? Worse case scenario just let your photographer know that's your "bad side".

I have a friend with bald patches from alopecia - and she loses large chunks of hair around the same size. She met with her hair stylist, and went over various options to cover her bald spots for the wedding. they pulled her hair back in a low bun/curls so the hair she did have was able to camouflage the areas she didn't have anything at the time of the wedding.

In her every day life - she keeps her hair short, and never puts it up, she will use a hair clip to keep it out of her face, but uses her hair to cover her bald spots daily. I would recommend calling some salons to ask if they have stylists with experience styling hair from thinning/balding patients - perhaps someone with experience with hair following chemo/radiation or alopecia to see if they have better tips for coverage.

I would recommend a wig, they look identical to natural hair now and are applied flawlessly. I am sorry about your hair and wish you the best with your health! You'll look beautiful no matter what on your wedding day!

I'm really sorry that you're going through this, but I am very happy you were able to get an appointment with your stylist. Your stylist will definitely know best here. I suffer from stress induced alopecia, which has definitely impacted the wedding planning process. Your stylist should be able to come up with a plan for the wedding, and hopefully for after as well.

Your stylist should be able to make it work - I'm sure she will try everything in her power to make it work and make you feel beautiful. Best of luck to you! Hair loss can be quite traumatic so I admire you for seeming so calm.
