Baked potato bar- Is that enough food?

Melissa, on March 14, 2021 at 11:56 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 27
Hi fellow brides: We’re having a small 30 people wedding on family property June 12th, 2021. We have a planner & are going to hire a caterer with staff. I really wanted to offer a baked potato bar for food. I think it would be awesome to have unlimited toppings, shrimp, meats, make a loaded baked potato or make one like a taco! Maybe also include sweet potatoes so guests have more options. Well, looking at pricing just for this is pretty high. I just want to ask if everyone would think this would be enough food to offer? I don’t want to skimp on filling up my guests. I can add a salad or another main course option, maybe? I’d love to hear your opinions!! xx

I think this is a know your crowd thing, honestly. I *love* just a baked potato as a meal (even with just butter and sour cream), H not so much. He'll eat it, but it's not something he does normally.

I'm not familiar with baked potatoes - would the options include protein side/topping, like chicken, beef, pork, etc? If the end result is a plate that is basically a dinner plate, I think you're good, as long as you also have some appetizers beforehand and desert.

Baked potatoes are very filling. If someone is still hungry, thats on them.

I love baked potatoes so I'm all for this! As long as guests can get 2-3 potatoes and the shrimp/meat is unlimited, I think it's enough. Like PP mentioned I'd also include some appetizers and a side salad isn't a bad option to add

I would definitely plan on adding a salad option as well! I think that would make it the best of both worlds (and still cost effective) because then guests who don't want to load up on carbs can add the meat toppings to their salads.

Yummy!! Loaded bake potatoes are very filling & like Hanna mentioned, having a salad will be plenty of food.

My aunt did this for Thanksgiving one year and it was not enough food. I guess maybe it *could* be if you had very heavy toppings, but I think it might leave guests hungry from experience

This is such a unique idea I think it could work with the right proteins — shrimp, brisket, shredded chicken, sausage, etc. A salad option would be a nice addition since the same toppings can be used for both.

Also make sure to have vegan toppings (cheeses, meat substitutes) available for any guests with restrictions and properly labelled.

I can’t eat potatoes, especially baked or sweet potatoes. But I wouldn’t mind if there was enough toppings to make something else!

I don’t think this is a horrible idea. Some potatoes are quite large and can be filling. I’d add a salad option or maybe soup or small sandwiches. Some guests (like me and PP) don’t/can’t eat potatoes. I’d be highly disappointed and probably hungry if that was the only option. Like I said, not a horrible idea, just see what you can do add to it a bit.

Thanks for the opinions! There will be plenty of proteins available but I agree that a salad would be a good alternative & can use the same toppings. We will also make sure to have plenty of appetizers & deserts!!

If any of your guests have gluten allergies I would make sure you have options for them as well.

As PP said this is definitely a sort of know your crowd type of meal. I personally love this idea and I think it’s awesome! Maybe you could have cheaper side dishes added like even coleslaw or things like that. But still with 30 people for a small wedding on family property, I think it should be perfect. Do you plan on having cake or dessert? If so I think that would be fine.

Maybe have a rice too, if someone doesn’t want a potato they can load up a plate of rice with any toppings they want.

What on her menu explicitly has gluten in it?

I think this is a fun idea and highly customizable to different dietary preferences and restrictions. I definitely would do large green salads that can be topped with the potato toppings. What appetizers are you considering?
My husband wouldn’t love something like this and neither would my FIL, but I do think it’s impossible to 100% please every person at an event. This sounds like a lovely way to host your guests!

I meant milk not gluten. Things like butter, sour cream, and cheese would be examples of things that someone with a milk allergy wouldn't be able to have. We did have potatoes at our wedding, but they were a side dish rather than a main course.

I don’t think that’s enough food. It is heavy in starch and could be filling but I’d have other things along with it

No, to me that does not sound like enough food. To me and my family, potatoes are a side dish. I know you mention protein topping options , but to me toppings don’t make it a meal, and personally, I want things like cheese or sour cream on a baked potato, so that’s what I’d go for and then be looking for the rest! Don’t get me wrong— I love a good baked potato! And I’d be excited to have one at a wedding. I’d just definitely want something else to go with it.
Someone else mentioned soup, and I think a couple of soup options could be an interesting pairing, and maybe salad.

Good point! Most of the potato toppings I love do have dairy.
