Bahamas or Jamaica???

Ms. CiCi, on October 5, 2010 at 9:22 AM Posted in Planning 0 23

My wonderful brother is paying for my honeymoon and more than likely he will go with a Sandals Resort. He wants to know where we want to go but we can't decide. We've narrowed it down to either the Bahamas or Jamaica. I've heard that both are beautiful but I need some more opinions. Please help me decide.

I have never been to Jamaica, but when I was at the Bahamas it was so beautiful. I would love to go back there.

And congrats for your brother paying for your honeymoon. That is so exciting

I hear Jamaica is dirty and it's not safe to leave the resort. Never been so I can't say, but thats what I hear from people that go. They also say that the Bahamas are much nicer.

I've traveled a lot around the Carribbean, and went to Bahamas twice. Yes, it was nice, but I think Jamaica is prettier! Both have beautiful beaches, but Bahamas is flat. And Jamaica has mountains! not like the rockies with snow but still very beautiful

Jamaica is beautiful, but it's not incredibly stable , and like Miss Kay said, not extremely safe. FH and I went there on a cruise last year and we were told that the people who stay in Sandals are strongly advised not to leave the property. The Bahamas are gorgeous.

I have never been to the Bahamas but a friend of mine went to Sandles there for her honeymoon and she loved it. I have been to Jamaica.. and while I wasn't as happy with the food as I have been at other carribean islands, the people there made my trip. They are so fun and friendly! The beach there is AMAZING.

@Miss Kay - Jamaica is a very poor country as are most of the carribean islands that we visit often. None of which are the safest to travel away from the resort but doesn't mean that you can't. You can if you go during the day and ask at the resort where you should and shouldn't go. But you can most definately leave the resort you just have to educate yourself about where you can and cannot go.

Yeah Ive heard that Jamaica can be pretty scary even in the airport. But I also hear the food and drinks are to die for!

Vera's right! Most of the carribean isn't safe after dark for tourists. Doesnt mean you can NEVER leave the resort. The Bahamas and Jamaica are no exceptions. Most of the time you can go to town and shop during the day. You can also go on guided tours, many of which pick you up at the resort. But also, when you're down there, the resorts have soooo much to do, you really don't want to leave. It's like Europe where you want to go look at museums. But they do have a lot of great parks for hiking and such.

Excuse me, I meant its' NOT like Europe. True they have told stuff, but whenever I go down there, it's to relax. Take a tour that leaves from the resort and you'll get your 'adventure' fix.

Like I said, I've never been so I really cannot say. It's just what I've heard people say. Probably wouldn't keep me from going if that somewhere that I really wanted to go though. It's like anywhere you go I guess...some people love it, some people hate it.

Sandals Jamaica Ocho Rios was an awesome resort and a GREAT time Smiley smile We only left the resort once to go to Dunns River Falls (which is a must). I wouldn't stay for over a week, though. But I went last year and had an amazing time.

We're going to the Bahamas for our honeymoon, though, Sandals again. Just tryin to see new sights.

I have never been to the Bahamas so I can't comment on it. I have been to Jamaica for a wedding and I fell in love with the Island. I have been to several caribean destinations and Jamaica is on the top of my list or a close second. The food is amazing, the people are great and the beaches are beautiful. As for safety, Montego Bay is known for crime but besides that I felt safe off the resort. We stayed in Ochos Rios.

I've been to both and my vote is for The Bahamas. All of these beautiful islands have their nice areas and their run down areas, but I think The Bahamas has more of the nice parts. Of course, you'll have a lot of fun at both places. But I'd go with Bahamas, look into paradise island if you go

I have been to both The Bahamas and Jamaica. They are both beautiful islands and I'm sure you would have a wonderful trip either way, but if I had to choose I would say Jamaica. I had such a great experience there. The people were awesome. Yes, the island can be a bit unsafe, but all islands are like that to some extent. The resorts have so many activity options, you may not need to leave the resort. If you do choose Jamaica, you have to go to Dunns River Falls, its gorgeous!

As a Jamaican, it has areas that are not as beautiful as others just like some states in America have dingy areas that u should not wander into. Its beautiful and even though the typical Jamaican can only dream of affording to stay at the Sandals or Jamaica Grande, Tourists always enjoy themselves and thats why its the number 3 place for vacation in the entire world

They are both really nice. Just make sure you keep up with the news in Jamaica because they were having some domestic drama going on for a while and you don't want to travel into a situation that is uncomfortable. But you can't go wrong with either one for the money and the views :-) You may be able to get to the Bahamas faster on a plane ride depending on what city you are departing from...

Melissa, could you maybe elaborate on what particular things you didn't like, to give the OP more of an idea of what you're talking about? It's a very broad generalization to state that an entire country is "morally corrupt." For the record, our resident Jamaican Rochelle-Ann is anything but nasty. Smiley smile
