My mom and I are disagreeing and I want to ask around a bit. Is it bad luck for the groom to see the bride's dress BEFORE the wedding, while she is not wearing it or is it bad luck for him to see it in general? My mom and I are disagreeing and I want to ask around a bit. Is it bad luck for the groom to see the bride's dress BEFORE the wedding, while she is not wearing it or is it bad luck for him to see it in general? I say just bad luck for him to see it while I'm in it before the wedding, Mom says he can't see it until I'm walking down the aisle.

Also is it bad luck for him to see the jewelry I will wear, ie; tiara, necklace and earrings? I say no to this, Mom says yes. GR!

Oh my goodness! FH and I JUST had this discussion/argument last night! I really really want a first look shoot (for multiple reasons), and he really wants to "stick to tradition." Driving. Me. Nuts. There are so many traditions people agree to not follow or aren't even aware of, I don't see the harm in not going with this one.

You know I don't believe in any of that, if your marriage fails, it is not because he saw you before or saw the dress or any of that nonsense, it failed because of other reasons.

Yeah we decided to not let him see anything that I will be wearing while walking down the aisle, not really because of superstitions but because I want to keep it a surprise so when he sees me for the first time coming down the aisle it's a complete surprise. Just for the fun of keeping it secret mostly.

There is no way we can avoid not seeing eachother before the wedding. We have to check in 15 minutes prior and already be dressed. This is one tradition i wanted to keep but looks like it is unavoidable Smiley sad He has not seen my dress yet, but he has seen my jewelry.

Its only bad luck if you believe its bad luck! If you dont give power to the tradition is has no power over you and is just some weird thing someone made up ages ago. But traditions can also be fun because it provides something that we can hold on too.

But really, Im pretty sure no one actually believes they will have bad luck in their marriage if their groom sees them in their wedding dress, thats kinda nutso. There is not some big bridal fairy in the sky waving a magic wand over the marriages of couples who happen to see a wedding dress, or not, before the walk to the alter....and curse their marriage if a dress is seen.

The interesting thing is that Jewish tradition is actually the opposite: The groom is required to see the bride before the ceremony, and he is the one who puts the veil on her, in a ceremony called the bedeken. This tradition comes from the story of Jacob in the Bible. Jacob fell in love with Rachel, and worked for her father for seven years in order to be allowed to marry her. However, at the wedding, the father sent his other daughter, Leah, instead of Rachel. Jacob then had to work another seven years to get to marry Rachel.

That's just superstition. My FH doesn't want to see my dress, so he won't, but he'll probably see my shoes and some other parts of my look before our big day. Some brides go dress shopping with their FH, you can really choose whatever you want.
