Backyard Wedding Noise Levels??

Sierra, on February 3, 2020 at 6:35 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11
Hello! I found a beautiful local venue that I am in love with! It’s a vacation home but she has also rented it out for small weddings (I’m planning 50-75 people), family reunions etc. I am concerned about noise levels because it is still in a neighborhood. Could we still do music and dancing with neighbors around? I don’t want to be disrespectful or cause the owner any problems. It is more secluded than a typical suburb neighborhood but not by much. Other homes are still 30-40 feet away. Suggestions?

I would ask the owner if there is a noise ordinance in the area. Our venue is also in a residential area, and we can only have our music up to 64 decibels, and we need to cut the music off by 9pm since it’s a Sunday. If they rent it out for weddings, they likely have things like that in their contract. You can ask City Hall if the owners don’t know - but they should!

What time is your wedding? I think as long as your are shut down by 9pm or 10pm, you will probably be fine. But like Suzie suggested, I’d check local noise ordinances.

I would check with the venue to see what they ask of you guys with the loudness and if they have a cut off time. I would check that before you book with them . Smiley smile

Definitely check local noise ordinances, but also be conscious of timing. I had a backyard wedding (with amplified music and dancing!) but we were sure to start early so we could end early — and we ended the party at 9pm. ...haha then again, we invited all the neighbors just to make sure we kept everyone happy 🤣. (But it was our house so we knew them)
Worth asking the owner about, as they may have dealt with this before !

I am having my wedding at an Air BnB that is also rented for events and weddings and was explicitly told by the vendor that music needs to die down/turned off by 11PM. The owner should know this information if it isn't already stated in your contract.

I would check with the town/city where the house is located about the laws related to noise and other "nuisance" issues. I'd also check to see if the house is located in a community/development that has its own CC&R's. We're in So Cal and ALL of the above is SUPER common here. Last summer a neighbor hosted a graduation party, and the music, in the middle of the afternoon, was fairly loud, and someone in the neighborhood called the police and they shut it down immediately. Nuisance issues can include parking or having more than a certain number of people on the property, etc. If there is a community association, they can have their own rules that are MUCH stricter than the city's and often homeowners will not hesitate to complain and/or call the association or police. You don't want to spend a ton of money and time planning, only to have your wedding ruined. Do you homework.... Good luck!

Thank you! That link is super helpful! My wedding isn’t until Sept 2021 and we’re planning on 75 people (which is going to be a big cut from our original list so hopefully no hurt feelings 😬) so I’m gonna wait and talk to her this summer but I definitely have some other venues in mind in case this doesn’t work out. Thank you for your advice and good luck with your wedding!!
