Backless Dress Woes/Add Boning?

Mrs. Mac, on March 7, 2016 at 11:20 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 38

Hello. My name is MacToBe and I have a tummy pooch. Smiley winking

My dress is below .... pretty unforgiving and I realize I brought this on myself by choosing this dress. I love it. What can I say? What I don't love is that it has an illusion lace back that plunges down to near my panty line, so any kind of tummy-minimizing shapewear is out (I've tried briefs but they give me a mahoosive muffin top). I've lost 25 pounds and have been doing ab workouts like a mad woman but my pooch doesn't want to leave.

Do you think I could get away with having some boning sewn into the front and sides to help smooth things out or do you think that would show too much on a dress like this? .... or..... *gasp* Do I just need to embrace the pooch?

I'm not sure about the boning, but for me the tummy pooch is the last to go. You still have a decent amount of time that if you continue to manage your portions and exercise you will probably keep reducing the tummy pooch. You can't spot reduce it, but as you lose fat it will eventually come off of there. I'm sure you look beautiful as is though, and you should embrace your body no matter what on your wedding day!

I don't have a ton of advice, I just wanted to say I almost bought this dress!

For your actual question, I'm not sure if boning would work since the lining is so thin. You could check with your seamstress though and see what she thinks. I'm sure it looks better than you think.

My dress has a very low back and my stomach "pooch" is the area I'm most concerned about as well. First of all, realize that your "pooch" is probably mostly in your head and even if your stomach isn't totally flat, most people won't zero in on that at all! I personally wouldn't go for boning because I think it will look unnatural in the dress, but it could be worth it to talk about over alternatives with your seamstress.

To help tone the area in general, though, I highly recommend starting a full-body weight training routine...you can't "spot train" and only reduce fat in one area, so lowering your overall body fat by lifting weights is probably how you're going to get the best results. Good luck, I'm sure it will be gorgeous on regardless...the back on that is so stunning!

You should post a pic of yourself wearing the dress. You might think there is a pooch but other people don't! I think your dress is beautiful!

@Reese, I loved this dress so much because of the back. I wasn't comfy with having a completely naked back, like in the strapless I almost bought.

Yeap, I plan to chat with the seamstress about options for sure. The dress is due to arrive the first week of April, so I was just wondering what other folks thought in the meantime.

I've been doing full body workouts too -- not only abs. Sorry. Should have specified. Smiley winking

@Dex, I would love to but sadly, I don't have one. Smiley sad My mom and sister and I all felt like idiots when we left the store that day because we forgot to take photos! When I go to pick it up next month though, I'll be sure to get one!

That "pooch" is where your organs are. Aside from having them removed, there's really not a ton you can do. I'm sure it's nothing noticeable!

@FutureMrs.Webb, Pretty sure there's an overly healthy layer of fat over those organs. Smiley winking

Your dress is gorgeous! My dress also has a lace back with buttons - but not as low.

Perhaps something can be added to the dress (tummy minimizer) during alterations if you need to help smooth out the shape of your tummy.

I must say, the right seamstress can resolve ANY dress problems that arise!

Best excerise I've found for pooch is lying on back on the floor then keeping legs straight and raising them up very slowly and slowly back down -it's an absolute killer for me but damn it works

@Debra - Thanks! Smiley smile Yeah I'm really eager to speak to the seamstress when I go for my first fitting.

@beachwedding, I used to do that and it was such a good part of the workout, but I've had lumbar back surgery and can't do stuff like that that puts too much strain on my lower back. I've had to do a lot of digging to find back-friendly lower ab workouts. They're limited but they're out there. Smiley winking

Do you have a pic of you in the dress? It might be easier to give ideas that way. I had a tight mermaid dress but it had a decent amount of boning and a corset back so that helped keep everything in its place Smiley smile

I had a keyhole back on my dress, though it wasn't quite as low as yours. I kept the boning in the sides and actually removed the boning that was in the front because it made my boobs oddly pointy. It was weird. Maybe talk to a seamstress to see what your options are?

Honestly, I'm on team embrace the pooch. I'm sure it doesn't look as bad you think (and I'd love to see a pic!!!) and on your wedding day the last thing you'll be thinking about is what your stomach looks like.

My dress is similar, but maybe a little higher in the back. I plan to get a low back corset or longline bra and have the seamstress add an underlay to bring up the solid back higher if necessary. I know the bra will cinch in my high waist a lot, but I'm still going to have a lower tummy pooch. If it really bothers me I am going to try high waisted spanx that fall under the corset, which will end at the high hip.

Stunning dress! I totally get this though.. my dress is all illusion material in the back so there are no undergarments that are gonna really help. I also have a stubborn pooch too.

Keep us updated on what you decide to do with your dress!

When I need to tighten up my abs, I use HIIT workouts and Ab workouts from FitnessBlender.com three days a week, with total body strength 2 days a week.

Ladies keep in mind you cannot spot reduce.

All the ab work in world won't mean anything.

OP I'm sure you're probably imaging half the problem. I have this weird delusion that I look half pregnant half the time because of the way my uterus sits in my body. Most of the I'm okay with it and then every once in a while I freak the eff out about it.

Solution has been to turn around and check out dat ass. Because bubble butts make me happy. =D

Congrats on the progress you have fought hard for and don't down play that. I suspect no one will even notice Because you look stunning in the gown as is. Don't sweat it!

Beautiful dress! You still have time to lose the pooch. Spot targeting your weight to a specific area doesn't help you get rid of the pooch. You gotta work the whole body out. Sometimes it can be bloating. Hope this pic helps. You can do it Smiley smile
