Is it rude to ask for a gift card in your registry? FH and I will be moving into our first home in June and we need to re-do the floors and would like to paint and we were thinking about putting a note (not in the invitations or anything, just on the wedding site) about Home Depot gift cards to help with that. Is that tacky or rude? This all came up because we have had a few family friends tell us that we need to put more expensive things on the registry and we are not sure what else to add because we don't need any big ticket items, but help with fixing up our new home would be awesome. What do you think?

@ Brittany: No one has said its inappropriate, But some are thinking it. I guarantee it.

Keep your registry minimal and people will give cash.

I do t think so, we did something similar to this. We are preparing for home renovations so our registry allowed us to setup a "Group Contribution" gift where people could donate.

No one will tell you it's tacky, Brittany. And you don't know what they really think.

I didn't think ya deserved snark OP, lol...

And I believe that HD does have a registry, but I love the amazon idea!

The amazon idea would be the way to go.

I've never taken a physical gift to a wedding though, always cash or gift cards, so I would probably just plan on using that for the remodeling supplies.

Don't ask for gift cards, honeymoon funds, or straight out money. Have a limited amount of ideas on your registry or none at all. People will give you what they want regardless of all this. Amazon is a great place to do a registry from what I have read. Good luck!

@Brittany just because you haven't heard them talk, doesn't mean they aren't.

It's considered tacky to put it on there and I wouldn't feel comfortable telling people directly, but I don't see anything wrong with telling your parents and maybe some VIPs that Home Depot gift cards are something you'd really like. They can let others who may ask know that if they're not comfortable giving cash as want to feel like they "got something" then Home Depot gift card would be greatly appreciated.

I know adults can do this themselves and most will give cash but some people aren't comfortable doing so.

Thanks everyone! I really wasn't sure if the whole gift card thing was similar to a honeyfund and such. Thanks for setting me straight!

Just register at 1 store and whatever you don't want can be converted to a gift card.
