Asking for a gift card and other registry questions

Brewedwithlove2016, on April 11, 2016 at 2:23 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 28

Is it rude to ask for a gift card in your registry? FH and I will be moving into our first home in June and we need to re-do the floors and would like to paint and we were thinking about putting a note (not in the invitations or anything, just on the wedding site) about Home Depot gift cards to help with that. Is that tacky or rude? This all came up because we have had a few family friends tell us that we need to put more expensive things on the registry and we are not sure what else to add because we don't need any big ticket items, but help with fixing up our new home would be awesome. What do you think?

You don't need to put expensive things on if there's nothing you want. Don't ask for giftcards. Just keep the registry small and people will give you cash.

Where are you registering? Typically if a couple is registered at a store I will sometimes buy them a gift card to that store.

When you set up a registry, most (if not all) will automatically put a gift card at the bottom of the registry. You don't have to register for a gift card. Home Depot doesn't have gift registries. You have to create a public list...I checked into it for legit items there and found it super annoying so I ended that process (but my patience was thin that day).

It sounds like you've got a registry, so I wouldn't add more stuff just for the sake of adding stuff. Anyone that knows you will know you're going to be in the middle of a remodeling project. I say let people draw their own conclusions and don't list it on the website.

I think I read online somewhere that Home Depot has a wedding registry. That would be a really good way to get some supplies for fixing up your new home.

Make a registry with Amazon and add some items from Home Depot.

Don't register for gift cards! If you have a small registry, people will get you cash.

If you don't put expensive stuff on your registry and people want to give you a large gift, they will give you cash. Don't register for gift cards. They will get the point.

Jacqui76 - We only need paint and new flooring from there and nothing else. Would you add those specific things on there? Or just not put anything and use any cash you get to go towards. I just feel like flooring and paint is expensive for one person to get?

Thanks for the responses Smiley smile

I would say no to putting the gift card as a request on the registry. People might give you gift cards regardless. I know the fact that registries are an accepted thing makes it seem like you can tell your guests what you want to be gifted. Thing is the registry is to help out those guests who want to get a physical gift. But all gifting is optional.

Don't request gift cards or money anywhere. Make a small registry and usually on the site it automatically adds gifts cards on there. If you have a small registry, people are smart enough to get the hint.

Okay, thanks everyone. We will just keep the registry how it is and use any cash we get towards the house.

No. Adult people know how to give you money, and frankly, it's a lot easier than going to a registry even if you have one.

I would do an Amazon registry and then register for things you may need like tools, etc!

On our wedding website it says 'registered for BBB, Macys and Home Depot gift cards.'

No one has said or thought that it was inappropriate to do.

Have your family try to spread it casually by word of mouth.

I also think there are registries out there that can take items from any store to add, so you can have items from multiple stores on one registry, but I don't have any personal experience with them. There may be a fee and you probably won't get discounts on remaining items. Myregistry.com was the first one that popped up using a quick google search.

I second (third?) the idea of the Amazon registry and adding in items you may need to help update your house. (Like a tool set, ect.) Keep your registry small and your guests will get the hint and give you cash instead.

Most stores have the option when you register to say - giftcards accepted? yes/no.

But you'd have to register at Home Depot then.
