So I've known from the beginning that I wanted a taco bar (my FH and I love tacos/burritos and I'm a vegetarian so I can eat so many things which is really exciting!) So I contacted a cool street taco joint restaurant near our venue and I was blown away at the amount of food we could get for our budget with them. We would get salad, beef, chicken and beans with corn plus toppings, guacamole, chips, salsa AND pimento cheese mac and cheese (Idk why but I really want mac and cheese at my wedding lol) they would come set it up/deliver and include the gratuity it was a KILLER deal. I was ready to book.
So I tell my mom (BTW she already shot down the idea of having a taco bar when I first told her thats what I wanted) and she FLIPPED OUT. A little background, my parents are helping us pay for almost half the wedding so I feel like I have to tell her these things. I tried to explain to her that we can't afford a traditional caterer and this was a great deal for the amount of food we would be getting and everyone I've talked to about it is stoked. I don't know what to do... I'm so ready to get a caterer booked so I don't have to worry about it anymore but she was very upset about this. She told me I was an embarrassment to the family and said she would have to order pizza for my out of state family because she can't imagine my 95 year old grandma eating a taco or her father handling the spicy food (I guarantee the food would not be spicy) and that she was gonna have to bring her own microwavable meal because she would ruin whatever dress she buys by eating tacos. When we hung up the phone my sister even texted me and said she was throwing things around and was super pissed.
So I tried to compromise, I found a couple food trucks that have customizable options and I was going to make the vegetarian option tacos and the omnivore options some kind of sliders or grilled chicken sandwiches. But food trucks SUCK at communicating. I don't get responses for weeks sometimes and its really stressing me out. I have no idea when I will even be able to try the food (if thats an option) and I still am not sure what the exact cost will be (I've only been given ranges) and there would be no buffet so I'm worried about people waiting a while for food. I'm starting to panic that by the time I get my answers from these food trucks it might be too late to have any other catering option besides food trucks. I know my wedding is a little ways away but I really wanted to get this out of the way since catering books quick and I am getting married at a very popular time of year.
So as a guest what is your opinion on tacos? We are not having a very traditional wedding to begin with, its all outside and in a tent. Even though my parents are helping with almost half the budget we don't have a huge budget. Oh and to add even my photographer said she photographed a wedding that had that taco place cater and she said it was very classy. There is also a chance my out of state family might not even come to the wedding and I don't think one meal of their life would be that big of a deal. I'm sorry this is long, but I just don't know what to do. Thanks for any help and insight.
