As a guest, what are your thoughts on a taco/burrito bar?

Christina , on July 18, 2018 at 10:04 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 39

So I've known from the beginning that I wanted a taco bar (my FH and I love tacos/burritos and I'm a vegetarian so I can eat so many things which is really exciting!) So I contacted a cool street taco joint restaurant near our venue and I was blown away at the amount of food we could get for our budget with them. We would get salad, beef, chicken and beans with corn plus toppings, guacamole, chips, salsa AND pimento cheese mac and cheese (Idk why but I really want mac and cheese at my wedding lol) they would come set it up/deliver and include the gratuity it was a KILLER deal. I was ready to book.

So I tell my mom (BTW she already shot down the idea of having a taco bar when I first told her thats what I wanted) and she FLIPPED OUT. A little background, my parents are helping us pay for almost half the wedding so I feel like I have to tell her these things. I tried to explain to her that we can't afford a traditional caterer and this was a great deal for the amount of food we would be getting and everyone I've talked to about it is stoked. I don't know what to do... I'm so ready to get a caterer booked so I don't have to worry about it anymore but she was very upset about this. She told me I was an embarrassment to the family and said she would have to order pizza for my out of state family because she can't imagine my 95 year old grandma eating a taco or her father handling the spicy food (I guarantee the food would not be spicy) and that she was gonna have to bring her own microwavable meal because she would ruin whatever dress she buys by eating tacos. When we hung up the phone my sister even texted me and said she was throwing things around and was super pissed.

So I tried to compromise, I found a couple food trucks that have customizable options and I was going to make the vegetarian option tacos and the omnivore options some kind of sliders or grilled chicken sandwiches. But food trucks SUCK at communicating. I don't get responses for weeks sometimes and its really stressing me out. I have no idea when I will even be able to try the food (if thats an option) and I still am not sure what the exact cost will be (I've only been given ranges) and there would be no buffet so I'm worried about people waiting a while for food. I'm starting to panic that by the time I get my answers from these food trucks it might be too late to have any other catering option besides food trucks. I know my wedding is a little ways away but I really wanted to get this out of the way since catering books quick and I am getting married at a very popular time of year.

So as a guest what is your opinion on tacos? We are not having a very traditional wedding to begin with, its all outside and in a tent. Even though my parents are helping with almost half the budget we don't have a huge budget. Oh and to add even my photographer said she photographed a wedding that had that taco place cater and she said it was very classy. There is also a chance my out of state family might not even come to the wedding and I don't think one meal of their life would be that big of a deal. I'm sorry this is long, but I just don't know what to do. Thanks for any help and insight.

Tacos are very casual to me, so as long as it’s a casual event I suppose they’re ok. You may not think one meal of your family’s life is a big deal, but this meal is supposed to be your way of thanking them for coming. While I don’t believe you have to cater to every single guest if people are just being picky, I think you need to hear your moms concerns and take them into consideration, especially since she’s paying for half the wedding.

As a guest, 110% yes to a taco bar. I know how to eat tacos with a fork so I don't end up with ground beef and sauce all over my dress, and I'm SURE your guests will as well. I also feel like if your grandma can eat pizza, she can eat a taco. Your venue (outside and in a tent) is perfect for a taco bar. A hand-washing station next to the taco bar might help your mom's peace of mind in terms of messiness and clean up?

However, I think the only way you'll be able to have a taco bar is if you pay for 100% of the food cost. "Sorry mom, this is the budget I have so this is what we're going with."

Maybe it's the SoCal millennial in me speaking, but I love taco bars. I would label everything carefully though so spice levels are noted to avoid issues like that. I would tell your mom you think it'd be a fun, basically complaint-free option since they choose what they want. We almost went with one ourselves but our vendor included catering already.

I think it would be fine for a casual wedding. All the older members of my family eat tacos, even those in their 80s and 90s. Your guests don't have to make tacos out of the ingredients. They could take lettuce, add a protein and put the toppings on. It would be more of a salad and neat to eat. Maybe your mom is envisioning Taco Bell tacos instead of what you are planning on serving, which would be several steps above Taco Bell.

Yeah I like the idea of labeling everything especially if something is a little spicy!

My thoughts too about customizing everything! They could even have a plate of mac and cheese and add whatever they want to it. I tried to tell her it would not be like taco bell at all but she was so mad that she was barely listening to me. I just hope I can talk with her about it again without her getting so upset...

I'd be okay with it! It'd really depend on the venue. If it was a black tie event at a really nice country club, I wouldn't really be interested in a taco bar or food truck. But if it was a semi-formal wedding, maybe even outside? Then I think a taco bar would be totally fine and unique!

I think tacos are super casual and I've been to a few weddings with them. They are definitely super messy and very hands-on to eat. But I think it could work with your venue.

If you really want the taco bar, I'd pay for it yourself.

Also, your mom sounds super dramatic and I'm sorry she makes you feel this way. I can't imagine a mom who calls me a disgrace to the family for wanting some dang tacos at my wedding. I'd do what you want but expect to pay for it all.

Does your mom live close enough that you could take her to the restaurant so she can see what the food would be like for the wedding?

I would love a taco bar! But I recently watched a wedding show who had one and the guests said they only thing they wished were different were that the tacos weren’t so messy. So maybe offer a bowl option too.

Maybe is the Mexican in me, but I don't understand your mom's concern about ruining her dress eating tacos. Perhaps teach her how to eat them the correct way?
Also, they don't HAVE to make tacos right? If it's like a biffet they can just get meat and sides and skip the tortillas.
With that said, you have to be realistic in that whatever your photographer says, a wedding with a taco bar is most definitely a very casual wedding. That doesn't mean it won't be nice though.

Also, please tell me by beef you did not mean ground beef and these are not American-invented hard shell tacos?
If so, I would probably not like the food if I were guest. But, still you don't have to cater to every guest.

We are doing a taco bar! I say go for it! It's super fun and sets a good mood for the party. If she's worried about it being messy, just provide some bowls and tell her to make a taco salad lol.

I thought about taking her there to try it with us but she is 3 hours from where I live and almost 2 hours from where the restaurant would be. The restaurant is an hour from where I live so it would be a little difficult to coordinate it but it could be doable. I think I told her that too and her response was something like, "I like tacos but I don't want to eat tacos at your wedding"

Hell yes to tacos!! 🌮 If ours didn't come with a caterer I definitely would have looked into it. Weddings should show off the couples style!

Unpopular opinion: I also don't always agree with the traditional political correctness of weddings. We are paying for our wedding but even if someone wanted to contribute, I'd still do what showed off our style. It's kind of them to help but I don't think anyone should essentially give a gift of money towards a wedding expecting to get what they want on a day that isn't even about them. You guys get ONE day all about you, make it count!

I would do the taco bar that you loved. It is your wedding, not your mother's no matter how much money she is putting into it. You can explain to her that the food is coming from the half that she is not paying for. You are the one that needs to be happy at the end of the day!

Haha yeah my sister was joking that she would get my mom an apron to wear. And no I think its actually carne asada (I hope) and no hard shells just flour and corn tortillas. And right they don't have to make tacos they can do whatever they want with it.
