As a Guest, Do You Prefer Keg or Bottled Beer?

Pancakes, on November 18, 2014 at 12:40 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 27

I apologize for the silly question. I'm bored and this lunch I brought is not very good so I'm avoiding it.

Our venue accommodates kegs, but they recommend bottles because it's faster to pop off a bottle cap than to fill a glass from a keg. FH likes the idea of a keg for one beer (like a Great Lakes) and a more popular beer (like Yuengling or Bug Light) in a bottle, so we can save money. I'm less concerned about the money and more concerned about the guests. I don't want people waiting forever to get their drinks. The venue only staffs two bartenders and our guest list is around 220. I don't know if there is a different taste between the two options. I don't drink beer, so I'm leaving it up to FH to decide. But thought I would ask what you guys think. Have you been to a wedding with a keg? Was it slow service? Do you think it tastes better than bottles? Opinions appreciated.

Thanks!

I did bottles, for the reasons your venue listed. AND if there is extra it isn't wasted if you have bottles. I did Yuengling and Magic Hat #9, and some Redd's

Ooh. FH likes Magic Hat #9. I'll remind him of that when it's time to buy them!

Oh I was concerned about people breaking the bottles...it didn't happen. Late 20's/early 30's adults aren't party smashers. Smiley smile

They did throw a fog horn in the fire though.

We did bottles also to avoid the issues with the keg. Plus what to do with the keg if you have any leftover? Bottles you can take home.

I don't know about slow service, but I prefer the taste of bottled beer to keg beer. Although not enough that I would be mad that a wedding had keg beer instead of bottles. I'd still drink it, but bottled is my preference.

I HATE keg beer. Hate hate hate it.

In my area, keg beer is the standard for receptions. It's the easiest and cheapest option. However, when I'm at a wedding, I'd rather pay for a bottle than drink free keg beer.

We're doing bottles. It just seems quicker and easier.

I think I would prefer bottles. I don't know why I just would.

We are having can beer that will be poured in a glass by the bar tender. Luckily my FFIL knows a person who knows a distributor and we are getting three 24 can boxes for only ten dollars. This is for any beer we want as long as it comes in 24 packs.

I personally don't really care, but I think I'm going to be buying bottles for my own wedding when the time comes. It's more logistics than preferring the taste--I would prefer having more options, and it's easier to do something with the leftovers.

For some reason my mom is convinced that everyone in her family has this insane aversion to keg beer. Like it makes them insanely hungover even after one glass. I remind her of this every time she orders a draft beer at a restaurant, but she insists it's different. Okay, mom.

A keg screams party to me. Weddings are typically not just a party and more formal IMO, so I would almost always go with bottled beverages.

@Lori... that's why I hate tap beer. I often get raging headaches after I've drank it. One of my co-workers used to work for a beer distributer, and he said that's a very common problem. If the CO2 isn't set properly, it can cause the effects that people complain of. He explained the whole science but I don't remember it.

I like beer, but only out of a bottle. I'll drink keg beer if I absolutely have to, but to me it tastes different than bottled beer. I would definitely say go with bottled beer.

Oh I know keg beer can give some people raging hangovers. I just don't believe it gets my mom (or any of her brothers and sisters) bad hangovers because they drink it all the time. She just uses it as an excuse why we can't have keg beer at any family event.

So I guess I will be the unpopular one and say that I prefer keg beer, I like the way it tastes better. That being said if you can get more variety going for all bottles I would pick that option anyday.

Also, I have been to weddings with keg beer, and honestly haven't noticed the difference in wait between keg and bottle (I'm sure there was one, I just don't remember it.)
