Are You Still Friends With Your Ex?

I've heard three main sides to being friends with your ex. The first is it shows that the exes are mature enough to move forward with a friendship even though your relationship didn't work out. I've heard three main sides to being friends with your ex. The first is it shows that the exes are mature enough to move forward with a friendship even though your relationship didn't work out. The second is that the exes were never really in love so a platonic friendship is possible. The third is that the exes are still in love with each other and use "friendship" as a way to hold onto one another. I don't know if there is one right answer to this question so let's get the discussion started!

Are you still friends with your ex? Why or why not?

I am friends with one, we get along well for the family we share. My most recent ex we tried but when he found out I was getting married, he got upset over petty things and stopped talking to me. I guess we had different reasons for "friendship" that I didn't realize.

Would you say you and your exes are mature enough to move forward with a friendship even though your relationship didn't work out OR that you and your exes were never really in love so a platonic friendship is possible?

I thought I was in love at the time.

We are mature enough to be adults.

We were not necessarily compatible as a couple in the first place... or we were too young.

On a whole, I think it's usually a bad idea. Most ex's eventually become toxic for each other for one reason or enough (either before or after the split). Only ones I know who really make it were were good friends before and they realized they were more platonic than romantically together.

I wouldn't say that I'm friends with any of my exes but I can be cordial with most of them. Similar to you I have a few exes who became toxic or were still in love with me so I can't even associate with them anymore.

Yeah. The worst was walking about from a 5 year long friendship. We tried so hard to be friends initially, and it looked like it was working. We were high school sweethearts that aged-out, but had both stabilized each other through difficult households. Our romantic interest had been fizzling for a long time, so it seemed like we might end up with this brother/sister(ish) thing in our golden years...

Well, when I started trying to move on in earnest and he was struggling with it, we started dragging each other down. I cut him off before we could make matters worse. It really hurt walking away from that friendship. Led to the hardest bounce-back and a horridly toxic re-bound.

Thank goodness my 20's are over and I re-met my husband when I was finally climbing myself out of that non-sense!

I was in the same situation with my ex. I finally realized he wasn't a good person and I was only with him because I didn't want to be alone. I was also in a bad place at the time I started dating him. If I saw in him public it would take all of my strength to not punch him in the face.

Yes it was! In a way my husband saved my life because I was going no where and was in a bad place mentally. I love my life now and I am so happy to get away from my ex.
