Are You And Your Partner "equally Yoked"?

The Bride, on July 18, 2019 at 5:43 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 24

"Equally yoked" is a Christian community phrase that can be used to justify marriage. I was raised to understand the phrase as when two people share the same religious views. However, as I got older and branched outside of my immediate Christian community I learned that some people view "equally yoked" as sharing the same political views, financial status, child-rearing perspective, and even physical attractiveness.

What is your definition of "equally yoked"? Are you and your partner "equally yoked"? Do you think partners not being "equally yoked" could impact their marriage? Why or why not?

I've never heard that phrase before. Interesting. I'd say we're pretty equally yoked by any definition. Where we're not equal be are complimentary.

As a Christian, I would only ever marry another Christian. It's a definite deal breaker. Its such a huge part of my life, that marriage with someone who isnt a Christian would be too difficult to sustain. Particularly as Im potentially looking at becoming a pastor/vicar in the future, it's way too tough and stressful a vocation not to have a spouse that believes the same thing.

Obviously there is much more to a relationship than just religious views and just because we are both Christians doesn't mean we are compatible.

I've never heard that phrase either!
But I'd say we are. Child rearing though we don't have a kid yet but our views definitely differ there aha. Hopefully once we are parents we can come to a compromise

In what ways do your child-rearing perspectives differ?

Well that is what it means. It originated in the Bible to mean that.

Doesn't mean that two people are compatible just because they share the same religious views but personally wouldn't use the phrase 'equally yoked' in other contexts like political views etc. I'd use compatibility or something like that.

I've never heard the phrase. It was important to me to share similar views, so we do share the same political, religious, and child rearing views. I found myself having too many disagreements with partners I had that I didn't share views with.
Do you need to share views to be married? No but it would require a lot of compromise and energy that I personally cannot justify in daily actions. But some people make it work.

I’ve never heard the phrase. I’m Christian and my husband is Jewish but we are on the same page with how we are going to raise future kids.

2 Corinthians 6:14 of the Bible refers to being unequally yoked.

Well I'm up in New England where we are more Catholics than Christains, and I'm an atheist, so I wouldn't be in an area where it's used. It sounds like a more regional phrase if anything.

Gotcha. It’s just unusual phrasing. I have a newer bible that says do not team up rather than yoked.

I’ve never heard of that phrase. We compliment each other. We were both raised in the Catholic religion, however I’m more open-minded about religion than he is - but neither of us are religious. We are both on the same page with politics & children, and are both considered equals at home.

Being on the same page about political views and children make a relationship so much easier.

In surprised more people have not heard of this phrase. It has been taught in church for as long as I can remember. Now with that being said my fh and I were not equally yoked at first. I think That I fell In love with him from the moment I saw Him and it did not matter to me as much as I would have thought growing up with that teaching. Now however we are. He had a hard time as first but has accepted Christ and goes to church with me weekly. It was the subject of some arguments and disagreements because of it though.

I heard that phrase many a times. That is a big thing in my religion to not be with someone “unevenly yoked”. I am marrying someone who is of the same faith as me. I have dated guys that didn’t share the same faith and it didn’t work out. I’m blessed to be with my FH! 💕
