Just curious. I've been googling it and I can't find any real history on the use of them. What's the earliest you can remember seeing one? The reason I ask is yesterday I was talking to my parents about it and they were real confused. My mom kept asking if guests were supposed to sign in and my dad didn't understand why anyone would bother writing in one when they really just wanted to go sit and eat. I had to explain that you just leave them out and people write their advice/wishes/etc. for the couple. They still didn't seem convinced. Smiley ups Are guest books a new thing or have my parents just never paid enough attention?

Yep agree with all ladies above not new, grandparents and parents had one at their wedding. Nowadays people have changed from traditional literal signing of book to more creative options i.e Etsy has tons

Maybe it’s a cultural thing that isn’t a tradition in where they came up in. But I’ve always seen guestbooks are weddings and funerals. Always. I do like the newer alternatives, but I still want to have a record of who came and celebrated with me. I’m planning do use a journaling Bible and have guests highlight their favorite verse and sign. It’ll be our family Bible to use for years and years rather than a book that sits on the shelf gathering dust.

Guest books are ancient. Ask your parents and grandparents. What has gone out of style is the guestbook attendant who makes sure everyone signs who comes in, as some people skip signing them altogether. But they have been around for decades (and reused for other events such as housewarmings, baby showers, etc).
