Are Wedding Guest Books a "new" Thing?

K.J., on April 6, 2020 at 9:49 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 23

Just curious. I've been googling it and I can't find any real history on the use of them. What's the earliest you can remember seeing one?

The reason I ask is yesterday I was talking to my parents about it and they were real confused. My mom kept asking if guests were supposed to sign in and my dad didn't understand why anyone would bother writing in one when they really just wanted to go sit and eat. I had to explain that you just leave them out and people write their advice/wishes/etc. for the couple. They still didn't seem convinced. Smiley ups Are guest books a new thing or have my parents just never paid enough attention?

They’re definitely not a new thing in my experience. My parents had one at their wedding and they got married almost 35 years ago. Almost every wedding I’ve attended as an adult (the last 14 years and probably 30+ weddings) has had a guest book of some sort.

My parents had a guest book at their wedding, so I don't think it's a new tradition. Maybe it's less common in some social circles.

My grandparents had one so it's definitely not a new trend. Every wedding I've attended as a child and adult has had one or a guest book alternative, which seems to be a new thing.

It is definitely not a new thing. Every wedding I've been to they have had some type of guest book.

Thank you, my parents are in their 70's so you would think they've been to enough weddings to know. Smiley ups

Thanks. I didn't think it was either, but they got me second guessing myself. Smiley xd

Not a new thing! They can be easily missed though at weddings if they are just a book. My FH and I opted to ditch the book and go with making our own round wooden guest board for people to sign. We figured we would never look at the book again and would rather have something we can use as decor in our house. We will have a separate jar and paper for people to write their well wishes and such! 😊

I don't know about my parents or older guests when they had their wedding, but they are not new.

Fun! We're also doing a little vessel for paper wishes, as I feel the same about the book. (It'll likely just end up sitting on a shelf collecting dust.)

Definitely not a new tradition. I think people are finding new ways to remember the guests who attended the wedding. Some people have wooden boards, letter box to bride and groom for date night, signed wine corks in a jar or sign a blank page in a frame with a note.

Not a new thing. I remember guest books at weddings when I was a kid over 35 years ago. My parents had one and my grandparents even had one at their 50th wedding anniversary vow renewal. That was about 30 years ago.

They have been at every wedding I have ever been to for many years. My grandparents still had theirs.

My grandparents who had a full wedding, kept it. My grandmother's till has it. And My mom and Dad and all their site is. I think every wedding I went to from the time I was 14, til I was in my mid twenties had one. The last 10-12 years. More people have not done one, or have done a wall chart, it different form of guest signing place. I generally cannot see the point, but many people do like them. Not a new thing at all.

I'm not sure how 'new' they are, but I can remember from back in the early 80s and have seen them at every wedding ever attended.

I've seen them the whole time i remember going to weddings. It may be more of a cultural thing, i was raised mormon and they were always at mormon weddings. However, i've been a bridesmaid in 3 non-mormon weddings and they all had guest books.

Definitely not new. My aunt has been married since 1962 and she still has hers!
