Are we too paranoid?- resizing ring

Natalie, on May 18, 2015 at 3:46 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17

So my engagement ring is a solitaire with an heirloom stone. The stone was set by a jeweler out of state who apparently knew my FH's family. The ring is about a half size too big, so I'm super careful when I wear it, but I don't feel like its too big for me to wear on a regular basis. We went this weekend to Jared to get it resized because we had been told when we bought our wedding bands there that they could easily resize it while we waited (and clean it for the wedding). Well it turns out that was incorrect and we would likely have to leave it overnight. I wasn't crazy about the idea but it made FH really uncomfortable. So, he called his mom who also said she'd prefer we wait until the jeweler out of state (where she lives) could resize it. So, I'm a little annoyed, because now I have to wait even longer for my ring to actually fit me (it will be over a year now already) but at the same time, I do understand the concern. Are we being unreasonably paranoid?

I personally wouldn't leave it with Jared either. Why don't you go to Claire's and get a plastic ring guard for not to take up the extra space?

My e ring came from Jared and when it was resized they did a beautiful job and it was done in under an hour. I trust them but I also understand wanting the original jeweler to be the one to resize it. I don't think you're being paranoid.

I would be careful with where you take it to be resize. Definitely get some personal recommendations. I failed to do this and my ring came back bent, learn from my mistake!

You're not being paranoid at all. I had a jeweler tighten one of my side stones over the weekend, and actually went to Jared's so they could confirm they didn't replace the diamonds with CZs (yes, I'm aware this is crazy). I might try to talk to Jared's again to see if you can wait for the ring to be resized. The guy who helped me yesterday said there are many women who don't want to leave their rings overnight and they try to work with them.

FH got my ring at Kays. I am getting my ring resized because it is half a size too small. They send it out and it takes 2 weeks.

Any jeweler should be able to put in a ring guard to help you temporarily!

FH got my ring at Jareds and it was several sizes too big but they resized it while I waited and it took about an hour.

They must have just been busy. We got our resized at Jareds and it only took a few hours for 3 rings (ering, band, FH's band)

I kind of had the same issue with zales. I didn't want to leave my ring with them so I bought an insurance policy for it (because my warranty would be void) and took it to a local jeweler who had it done in a few hours. I got the insurance through Jewelers Mutual. Even though I love my ring from Zales, I feel so much better knowing I don't have to depend on them if something goes wrong with the ring or it's lost.

I would say you're a little paranoid. My FH bought the ring sized at a 7 and I had it resized to a 6. It took about a week and was fine.

ETA: I would say paranoid about not "trusting" Jared (a big retail chain).. if you meant you were worried about them screwing it up, then yes go with the original jeweler! Smiley smile

A jeweler should be able to do it while you wait. If they can't I would wait to go to your FH's family jeweler and get a ring guard temporarily. (Or even a bandaid)

I think it depends on the band how long it takes to resize the ring. My jeweler got it done in about an hour and a half. I have heard of some rings needing to be sent out though. I don't think you're being too paranoid. Bring it to the jeweler that you trust.

I wouldn't want to leave my ring over night anywhere, I have always waited for it. Do you have a warranty or anything with the out of state jeweler that might be voided if you had it sized by another company? Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it (as long as you could wait for it) -- Jared's is a reputable company.

I wouldn't leave it there either. Is it possible for them to put a temporary ring sizer in it to make it fir until you can permanently have it sized?

My jeweler 'mapped out' the flaws in my stone when I left it with them, then I had to initial that it was the sae stone when they gave it back. I'm surprised they didn't offer that, but maybe everyone's used to the number I.D. now, and has forgotten the old system.

I don't think you're being paranoid at all.... Bait & switch happens WAY more than you would ever think! I would go to your trusted jeweler. I would never let my ring out of my sight at a store like Jareds!! I agree with the other suggestions to get a guard for a temporary fix until you can get to a trusted person to size it

I would not have left it overnight either. My mom years ago had the old switch-a-roo done when she took a ring in for prong repair. About 3 years later she decided to have the stone reset and it was not the same diamond!
