Are there any practical wedding magazines?

A&W, on January 13, 2016 at 2:26 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

I'm not going to have a very large budget for my wedding. I'm not sure what the exact number is yet, but I know it will be well below the average wedding cost that you always see in wedding statistics. I like the idea of subscribing to a wedding magazine, but only if they would actually be helpful for someone without a ton of money to spend. Are any of the wedding magazines worth my time and money, or are they more geared toward advertising expensive things?

They're all advertising expensive stuff. You'd have better luck getting ideas from Pinterest and others' wedding photos, or googling all inclusive wedding packages for where you want to get married.

No. Because they are, in essence, advertising media.

Start with a small guest list and BP and go from there. Prioritize, don't get sucked into the bridal industry combine, and you'll be fine.

The most realistic magazine I have found was The Knot- Michigan. I'm assuming they have them for different states as well. It shows pictures of real weddings and lists the budget and what vendors they used.

No, unfortunately. :/ All of the wedding magazines advertise expensive venues and dresses... The closest to practical I saw was a Knot wedding magazine geared toward Pennsylvania/Deleware/New Jersey brides. But even that was a little over the top.

Pinterest is a little more on the practical and DIY side. I've had more luck getting realistic ideas there.

Try checking out A Practical Wedding. It's an online site with lots of great tips to help you prioritize the different elements and keeps you focused on what really matters- you and your spouse to be, an officiant and a marriage license. The rest is fluff and the website helps you be more practical with the fluff.

I agree with Margaret P. Check out APW, offbeatbrides and search for the BAMs on here.

I don't know of any magazines that would be helpful to you. But maybe catalogs like Oriental Trading's wedding one will give you ideas. Definitely search on these forums for BAMs.

My local magazine, "Wisconsin Weddings," was helpful as it listed local - ish venues as I wasn't sure where to start. However, the most helpful directly was a free wedding planner "book" (thick magazine) which is distributed free around the area. Obviously it was all advertising but it was nice to see what was available. I got mine at a local stationary shop but I also saw them given away at bridal stores.

If you looking for some good healthy reading and you are on a budget I highly suggest this book Bridal Bargains, they update it about every other year with better and more information, I always get a copy for newly engaged brides I know:

None of the magazines I've received for free or bought have been helpful as a whole. Mostly ads and super expensive ideas. I do enjoy going into Barnes and Noble sometimes and browsing the wedding magazine section. You can pick and choose ideas, and occasionally find an issue of something that's actually helpful and buy that instead of committing to the whole year

Like LMac said, I basically used them for inspiration and figured out how to do things for less cost, but with the same overall look. They are pretty much multi-page ads, though.

Not really. But I do like cutting out pictures of flowers and cakes and things for inspiration.

When I got engaged my sweet MOH mailed me literally 15 pounds of bridal magazines. Probably used 4 things from the magazines. Which were pictures. They all have the same shit, honestly I feel like they are more for girls that want to be engaged than actual getting married people.
