Are photo booths played out?

The Nuptials, on January 20, 2018 at 5:03 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 41
We are having a black tie wedding in a major city (with all the trimmings) and I put a photo booth on my list of vendors. We haven't contracted yet, but it should be about $500 after discounts. The money isn't the issue, maybe I'm concerned about the vibe. We have a 12 piece band, valet, etc. Is it played out? Will we look silly? Thoughts?

I am wondering the same thing. Sorry I don't have an answer for you on this but I am interested to see what others say.

I was never a fan of photo booths at weddings since it separates the crowd but I know some people love them. Are they played out? Definitely,

You don’t need to provide “extra” entertainment. Great food, cocktails and fantastic music is more than enough. People know how to mingle and I’m sure your guests will take plenty of selfies without the help of mustache and lip props.

Ive been wondering the same thing myself, but honestly I have had a great time at all the weddings that had one! Gives a chance to be silly and fun when not on the dance floor

This is what I was thinking. I was also concerned about the location which would definitely separate the guests. We will have lounge seating for those who want to relax and 'observe'.

If we are all wondering the same thing, maybe that's our answer?!?

You know and what they say 'if you have to ask...'

I think we will skip it! I polled my friends and they are split 50/50 on this topic.

In my area they’re still huge at weddings. There’s a new type, a mirror one. We’re looking into it. It’s not a necessity but adds something fun for the guests, and can be a cool favor as well. 🙂🙂🙂

I'm kind of over them. Maybe a beautiful backdrop and give everyone the opportunity to get a quick prom or cruise-like portrait? Less silly but still fun and even gives them a favor they might use and enjoy.

I personally love them at weddings, if we happen to stumble upon some additional money, we plan to hire one. I don't necessarily think they separate people from the wedding either- all of the ones I've seen have been right alongside the dance floor, so you're still able to hear the music perfectly fine, and see everything that is happening!

I will say though- only one of these weddings was black tie- so I'm not sure if it's less 'appropriate' (for lack of better words) at this type of wedding vs the other weddings I have attended.

I’ve never been pro photo booths, I think they are tacky.

This would be much more classy than a photo booth I feel.

I think for such a high scale black tie event it would be weird to have a photo booth. It just seems like it would be out of place.

I also had a black tie wedding and still had a photobooth. It was a huge hit.

I personally felt like photoboots were childish. I have had them at all of my children parties and the kids loved them and the adults didn’t touch them. It causes a big distraction and could potentially make a crowd in that one area. My opinion leave the photo booth out.

I don’t know if they are played out, but lots of people definitely think they are fun and I think that matters more. My FH and I have some really cute photos that we love on our fridge from a photobooth at one of our friend’s weddings. I guess a photobooth might not fit the vibe of a black tie wedding though.

Played out, skip it. $500 is a lot of money. I have never once come home from a wedding and said, "Excellent food and drink but dammit I did not get to put on a pink boa, oversized glasses and make fish lips at the camera!! DAMMIT!"

My wedding was last weekend, the only thing I would not do again was the photo booth. We had 150 guests. There always seemed to be a line, it cost $1000 and when we got the drive with the pictures on it there were only 42 pics all night. That's $23 a picture. I would have done something else with that money.

I don’t think so. I wish we could afford one. Some places they are relatively cheap to rent, but in my area they are over 1k and it just wasn’t necessary.

I don't neccessarily think they're played out, but for the vibe you're going for I think I would skip it! If you did it maybe a city skyline backdrop, black and white pics with gold lettering to give it a classier vibe?
