Are paper plates tacky ?

Nancy, on December 28, 2016 at 10:45 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 45

We are getting married in April, it is an outdoor venue, with cabins, hay, ect. I have the mason jars for the drinks, would it be tacky to use paper plates for the meal, they are a great quality of paper plates, square cut white. Same for the dessert table. Using tablecloths and napkins.... just wondering abt the plates.

I wouldn't have paper plates but I know some people on here will say they would. I just came on here to remind you that people who are allergic to hay will hate you. My FH is allergic to hay and we would have to leave a wedding if there was hay involved at all. Not the best plan, even if it is cute in pics.

I'm more concerned about the hay bales. My allergies are already acting up at the thought...

I personally wouldn't have paper plates for a wedding, but I'm a fan of a more formal wedding. I was recently at a wedding where they did the paper plate thing. The trashcans full of paper plates were quite honestly a huge eye sore...but to each their own.

What are you planning to do with hay? A great many people have allergies to hay.

If you go the disposable route, I would suggest swapping the paper for plastic. They have some beautiful plastic plates that resemble real plates. They look better and are more sturdy...

Straw is usually cheaper and not as many people have allergies to it.

Don't use straw for seating, that sounds so uncomfortable...

Paper plates are tacky and just asking for someone to spill/drop their food. At the very least, at least do plastic plates.

I would definitely side eye someone if I went to a wedding with paper plates.

Libby, straw is pokey and messy and no-one wants to sit on in it in wedding clothes.

    No to the hay, please.

If your budget does not allow for real plates I would suggest looking into nice plastic ones. They are more sturdy and you can find affordable ones that look really good.

I agree with cutting out the hay, at least as seating or being too close to the reception. Lots of people are allergic to it, even if they don't know it yet, especially from direct contact or contact with food.

It may look nice for the feel you want, but for the comfort and well-being of your guests, I would cut it out.

I think these are beautiful so we're using them for our cocktail hour.

ETA: They are paper and from BHLDN.

We are using thick plastic plates from sams club. Don't do paper in any form. Even if you feel it goes with your theme, better dishware will add more of a classy feel over the fourth of July bbq
