Are Jeans semi-formal

Kelsey, on May 1, 2021 at 8:33 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15
I'd like a semi-formal wedding with floor length bridesmaid dresses but my fiance asked if they could wear jeans and a sport coat. I don't have a problem with jeans but would it look funny with floor length bridesmaid dresses?

I don't think jeans typically qualify as semi-formal. I don't think they'd necessarily look funny with the bridesmaid dresses though.

Many bridesmaid dresses are floor length. Semi formal translates to Sunday Best like you wear to religious services. Jeans are casual, not semi formal.

They would look fine together though.

Jeans are definitely not semi-formal. I'd classify jeans as casual.

The guys are also wearing Jean's in our Wedding next year. All I asked is that they are like new condition and deep blue in color with no pre-cut holes. Add a Sport coat and in my opinion, that's a sharp dressed man!

    They aren't semi-formal.

However, nice jeans with a sport coat will look fine, and will look fine with floor-length dresses. Some tips to make sure the jeans look nice:

    1. Brand new, no exceptions. No pulling jeans out of the closet.
    2. Darker colors tend to look more "dressy casual" than lighter colors. Go for deep denim.
    3. No tears, no rips, no washes, no "weathering".
    4. Well-fitted. No sagging, no bunching up at the ankle hem because the legs are too long. This may mean going to a more upscale/specialty jean store (like Buckle or similar) that have more options than a department store.
    5. Everyone needs to have a belt to keep them up where they belong.

Also, no sneakers. Dress shoes paired with nice jeans and sports coats will make the jeans look like an intentional "dressy casual" choice, and not just "everyone just grabbed jeans out of their closet."

Personally, I think jeans at a wedding are ridiculous, unless you’re having a country-themed wedding, and even then I’m not crazy about the idea. They certainly don’t qualify as semi-formal. If your FH doesn’t want his groomsmen to spend the money on tuxedos, then tell them to wear khakis with sports coats instead. That will look far better under semi-formal than jeans.

Jeans are casual, not semi formal. Whether they look okay together is a matter of taste. A lot of country style weddings embrace this look. Personally I am not a fan because it looks like a mismatch of effort...like the bride and bridesmaids are in fancy gowns and full hair/makeup, implying a lot of effort and care, and the guys look like it's another day at the office on casual Friday. BUT like I said it's a matter of personal preference. Maybe look through some pinterest photos of "grooms in jeans" and see how you like it?

Jeans are casual, even really nice, tailored dark wash jeans. They would not match a "semi-formal" themed event.

I personally don't like the look, but I've seen it at lots of weddings and I don't think it's too out of the ordinary.

Technically speaking tuxedos are semi-formal. Even though nobody thinks that way any more, jeans would definitely fall into the "casual" category. BUT - regardless of terminology, jeans and a sports jacket won't look out of place next to your bridesmaids dresses.

Lots of people wear jeans to and in weddings, but there is no way the word formal comes to mind when jeans are involved (even if you attach the semi- prefix). It sounds like you and your future spouse need to have some more conversations about how you both want your wedding to look/be/feel.

If you would be OK with some of the wedding party in jeans, then I think you should allow everyone to be equally informal (bridesmaids and guests). And most importantly, your outfit should be the same level of formality as your future spouse's (whatever level you two agree on). I have seen so many pictures with brides in formal gowns and grooms in jeans...and it looks like they are at two different weddings.

If you allow jeans the dress code should be casual and not semi-formal. There is nothing formal about jeans.

I don't think it would necessarily look bad but you can't classify it as semi-formal. Wearing jeans reminds me of casual rustic or country weddings which sounds to me what you may be going for. I personally think the vest will look better than a sportscoat.
