Arcade theme reception

Kenya, on January 14, 2018 at 10:42 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 20
My fiance and I are both gamers. We're considering renting arcade games and having a Wii and Xbox at our reception for fun. I know it's not traditional but we want to have things that express us. Is this inappropriate?

Yes. It’s a wedding not a party at your house. Youre celebrating your wedding. I wouldn’t want guests distracted by gaming.

I say if it's something you both love why not .. I wouldn't personally because I'm not a gamer .. actually I get really irritated when my FH plays Madden for 5 hours lol

I see a couple of problems with the idea. First, if you are hiring a DJ and having a dance, the gaming may keep people off the dance floor. I know some of my female friends would be pissed that their SOs would be gaming rather than dancing. I could see a few arguments occurring. Second, if you aren't having a dance, what are the guests who aren't gamers supposed to do during the reception?

If it's something you both love and think that your guests would enjoy, I don't see why not. Maybe don't make it the center of the reception so people who don't want to play aren't forced to play, but I don't see what it would hurt to have a Wii and an Xbox there.

The arcade games sound like an awesome little touch. (Personally the Wii and Xbox I would leave at home.) All in all not much different than a photo booth as far as taking guest attention away from the dancing and food. Ultimately it's your day!

You'll definitely appease a good majority of the guys there! I don't necessarily think it's a bad idea because it's such a big part of your lives, but I wouldn't have it as the focus of the reception. You could always theme your tables after games you like playing: one could be Mario Bros, one Zelda, etc.

I think it is a perfect way to display both you and your FH personally. It’s your wedding your day do what is going to make both of you guys happy. No it is not traditional but then again who’s to say anything is traditional anymore. This is a wedding i would love to be a guest at.

Renting arcade games may be pretty expensive. Just a thought, not sure what your budget is. Also, you may need to consider your venue space and power and position. Not everyone will be able to or want to play so consider options for everyone else.

I actually think this sounds really fun - I would have a blast at this wedding! I do agree wth PP though that this may be more expensive than you might expect. But if it’s within budget and works with your venue (look into those power concerns as well), I say go for it. It also might be easier to look into whether you have a Barcade or something similar in your area with a space that could be nicely decorated for a wedding reception. Good luck!

I have nothing against arcade games (our first date was at an arcade!) but I think it will be too distracting. You are more than likely paying a band or DJ a lot of money to get people out on the dancefloor to celebrate with you, and games will take them away from that. If you do it, I would do it during the cocktail hour, and then maybe you can repurpose them (kept in the cocktail hour room) as entertainment for kids (if you are having them) during the reception. The problem isn't so much about having them there as an option for entertainment, but the amount of time it will take your guests away from the dancefloor. Something like a photobooth only takes a minute or two for your guests to use, while a game like that can take a long time (if your guests are good at them!) and people could likely start playing against each other which would take even longer.

We are gamers as well and are incorporating our favorite games into some of the reception decor as a way of making it apart of our special day. Here are some of the table numbers I did!

I agree! You wouldn’t want that to take away from your wedding. Having it as a theme is a great idea. You could definitely name the tables after games. You could put a twist to like your cake toppers with the men’s ties. There are other ways you could incorporate gaming into your wedding without having actual video games.

I think it's a great idea. At the end of the day it's about you two and gaming is probably one of the many reasons you all fell in love anyways so what better way to show that than to have your games.

I’m having video games at my reception and I found a dj who is very excited about it. He’s setting up projectors and such and will be helping with tournaments xD

itll be fun and it’s what our friends and family will enjoy. I don’t see why not to

I think that’s a great idea personally. If you are worried about others being distracted think about having the games for partial of the wedding like maybe cocktail hour

To me, the issue with this is that weddings should have communal entertainment and playing a video game is an individual/small group activity. It also requires a lot of attention, which means people won’t be celebrating with you so much as just hanging out at your reception and doing their own thing.

Might it work better to work these ideas into your rehearsal dinner, and have that be food with a gaming party?

I think this sounds really fun!! I would try to think about quick games though so guests don't get swept up in a long game Smiley smile

There are also a lot of different ways you can incorporate a "gamer" or "arcade" theme into your wedding decor!
