FH is in the Marine Corps. We were together when he went through boot camp & MOS school. I don't know very much about coast guard, but there are a lot of forums similar to wedding wire where you can talk to other coast guard wives to get more info! Just google coast guard wives forums or coast guard forums.

My fiancé is in the Air Force but he's commissioned so I don't think I will be much help but feel free to ask any questions about military life! I'm an AF brat as well so I am pretty accustomed to it.

Thanks Ladies! Yeah I'm a little nervous about doing this as the time gets closer but I'll stand behind him in whatever he does. We has a waiter at a restaurant we were at say horrible things about Military life and it started to scare me. My dad was in the Coast Guard for 4 years but that was a while ago, so he tells me things but times have changed. My fiance plans on retiring with the CG, he is 26 years old now.

I personally love military life. It has its ups and downs but there is a lot of camaraderie between the service members and their spouses. There is a lot of support out there and people can be really helpful. I wouldn't let anyone scare you, its not a bad life.

Thanks that makes me feel better! I know it will be different than I'm use to but I am more excited than scared. The scared starts to rise when I hear other comments people make.

Yeah, I mean it can be pretty stressful especially with moving, deployments, etc. but you can do it. You just have to get comfortable with change and expect the unexpected. Home will be where the military sends you.

My FH is Air Guard and he's off for six months of training soon, from June-December. He also just got out of the State Police Academy, which lasted 6 months. I don't know how much communication he's going to be able to have with you, but I would highly recommend snail mail, even if you guys can call/text/email/skype....there's just something special about getting an actual letter in the mail. He said it really helped his morale. I also found that I could say a lot of sweet, mushy stuff in a good old-fashioned love letter that I might not have otherwise expressed. And now I have a lovely stack of keepsakes.

Hi Ashboo! This is my first post but I had to comment. My FH is currently in the Coast Guard and is stationed in Cape May where your FH will be going for boot camp. If you have any questions regarding the area or what to expect please let me know.

My FH is in the Auxiliary Coast Guard, which is volunteer based but they respond to all calls in the area. They are focused on saving lives and work closely with the Coast Guard. sometimes I jokingly call it "the other woman" because at times it consumes him and he spends a LOT of time training etc. But he loves it so I support him 100%.

Boot camp is 8 weeks. week 4 or 5 of boot camp he will get his orders so you will know where he will be stationed at and start planning. My FH says as far as communication goes he will not get his cell phone until three days before he graduates. He will not be able to use it until graduation though. He does however get two phone calls one during week 5 and one during week 7. The first phone call is to his new unit and the second can be to his family. On the weekend of week 6 they will have on base liberty where they can call home too. On the weekend of week 7 they will have off base liberty and they can call then too. Depending on his company commander "drill instructor" he may be allowed to write you letters during week 2. You can write him letters at any time but it is at the coast guards discretion when to give it to him.

    * Bonus Info * you can contact the MWR (morale-well being-recreation) and arrange to come into town a night early for his graduation and stay in guest quarters on base for about $65. Its a small 2 bedroom house they offer families and guests. Let me know if you have any further questions, I'm here to help!

It's not quite the same; but my fiance is prior navy and I'm still active duty. It's a crazy life change but it's a fun one.

I would say that you probably won't see him till he graduates. That's pretty standard for basic training.

My fiance is in the Marine Corps. He's deployed right now so planning our wedding pretty much by myself isn't easy. Just stay positive and keep yourself busy. Before you know it, he'll be back from boot camp Smiley smile

I don't know if the Coast Guard does the same thing, but the Marines have it where the day before they have a family day, and you can go and see your Husband the day before graduation. Then the next morning is Graduation.

My fiancé is currently in the Coast Guard and we are stationed in Houston. It all works out because I’m going to grad school there. His deployments are usually 2-4 weeks at a time, but other than that, it’s fairly smooth.
