Anyone worried about travel warning to Mexico?

Vanessa, on August 25, 2017 at 9:08 AM Posted in Planning 0 22

We just got engaged & are planning to marry in Sept. 2018 in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. We have been seeing a lot of coverage lately re guests that have stayed at 5 star all-inclusive hotels, being drugged & a few have even died. Now the US has issued a warning re travel to Mexico, specifically Cabo San Lucas, Cancun & PDC, due to an increase in violence. We're now thinking to reconsider locations. Thoughts? We are supposed to sign our contract this weekend...

I wouldn't be concerned about violence, but Zika might be a concern. If you or any guests are or plan to be or get pregnant, it could be an issue. Check CDC for more info..

There's alway travel warnings to Mexico. Well, not alway, but semi often. Definitely make sure your VIPs are good with going because of Zika and such and you should be fine. You just don't leave the resorts

I did see that! There's an article here: http://www.latimes.com/world/mexico-americas/la-fg-mexico-cancun-warning-20170822-story.html

I personally would not sign a contract and maybe find somewhere that's a little safer.

Please search for and read all of the other threads started recently about Mexico/travel warnings.

Then take a deep breath and don't worry about it.

Mexico is no more dangerous as a whole than the United States. You have a better chance of being killed in Chicago than you do in any major city in Mexico. But you probably aren't afraid to visit Chicago, right?

Don't get sucked into media hype. Be vigilent, don't get shit-faced and wander the streets and stay in high population, tourist-y areas or on the resort property. You'll be fine.

I wouldn't - you haven't booked yet between that and Zika - why risk it? If you're doubting it now, you have an opportunity to do something about it and book somewhere else

Plus even if you're not worried, you may have guests who are

We're going to Mexico for our honeymoon, I'm not worried.

The state of Quintana Roo has a population of 1.5 million people, and has had like 170 homicides this war, which is a huge spike. The city of Chicago has a population of 2.7 million people and has had about 450 homicides, for some perspective.

I said in a different thread yesterday that I'm not gonna stop experiencing things because of a minuscule threat I'll be a victim of some random act of violence. I work at a school, someone could come in with a gun today and shoot people, but I'm still going to work. Someone could bomb the concert FH and I are going to next month, but we're still going.

If the actual data were different, and the risk was much larger, I might reconsider. But since the actual chances of being killed there are similar to your chance of being struck by lightning, we're still going.

I'm getting married in aug 2018 and few people brought it to my attention. I'm not worried though.

I have mentioned it in a couple other forums - I travel to Mexico all the time for work. Specifically my job takes me to a lot of these all inclusive resorts a lot of people talk about in these forums. 90% of the time I have to travel alone and I stay at said resorts. I have never once felt in danger or uncomfortable. Traveling alone also means I take taxi's alone and do many of the tourist things alone. I am also a very small girl and even then I have never felt unsafe. I see weddings all the times when I am on property. Mexico is as dangerous as any of part of the world. Just do your research, look at the best resorts and locations, be vigilant . And as far as Zika goes, again it could even happen in the states. Out of the countless times I have been - I have probably been bit ONE time. Wear bug spray.

I would be more concerned about a hurricane in a gulf ruining your wedding plans than possible violence or tainted alcohol.

I am also getting married in Mexico. I have shared warnings about Zika with my guest. I would completely understanding if someone would declined going if pregnancy is something they are desiring immediately. However, they have the same danger of Zika in parts of Florida and Texas.

We had booked our honey moon to Mexico through a travel agent. Probably changing location to St. Thomas. We have travel insurance so shouldn't lose anything

I'd honestly be more worried about weather than anything. I've never been, but my parents have been to Cancun several times. One of those times was literally just after a hurricane (or maybe it was a tropical storm?? Sorry it has been a while ago).

My uncle and his now-wife just went to Mexico for their honeymoon earlier this month, actually. (I believe it was Cancun as well).

I would be more concerned with traveling there for a wedding during hurricane season than about possible violence. I live just outside Baltimore and we visit friends that live in the city, go out to eat or out to the bars, go to sports games, etc. frequently. Someone literally gets murdered every day in Baltimore (sometimes more than 1 person per day). I am never afraid to go there. Just be smart and use common sense, as you would anywhere else.

No but were not going anywhere near the places mentioned in the warning either. There are travel warnings from other countries about coming to the U.S. right now because of racism and violence. That doesnt mean I'm going to move out of the country

Going to Riviera Maya in October. We have no worries. FH is adamant about not leaving the resort or only doing things hotel related or sponsored. Anything can happen anywhere. Gotta live life.

I wouldn't because of Zika as well. You want to go somewhere you can relax and have a good time. With Zika, reports of being drugged, and violence, there's no way you could enjoy your honeymoon. I highly suggest finding a different alternative and not signing the contract!!

Echoing the "I'd worry about a hurricane" statements.

Playa is really safe and touristy, many of the resorts are in a gated community just south of the main city. I never felt unsafe at all when I was there last year.

FH and I are going to Tulum, Mexico (one hour away from Cancun) next month for our honeymoon! I'll let you know how it goesSmiley smile

I originally wanted to off the resort to get the cultural experience, but we may not really do that anymore. Not just because of the violence, but I was doing some research and found out that there are crocodiles there! So no more cenotes for us... FH hates being in water that is not clear to begin with.

I leave in 58 days. Not worried. I plan on staying on the resort or group outings to tourist areas. If I was going into the heart of the city, I might be worried. But there is crime everywhere. I'm 10 minutes from Camden and go into Philly all the time. I'm at greater risk there.
