Anyone with a ring from Kay Jewelers?

WhitWhit420722, on June 13, 2014 at 4:13 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 27

So I just went to Kay's and had my ring cleaned, I've gone before and what normally happens is they clean it right in front of me and give right back and say have a nice day(I've been to 2 different locations). Fast forward to today I go in a different location (moved) and she takes it and actually inspects it in front of a microscopic. She informs me that one of my smaller diamonds is chipped and she will send it off to be fixed. She gets on her computer and asks when was my last inspection I tell her I'm not sure of the date but I tell her the location. She says she has no record of it and they should've given me an inspection form after they cleaned the ring (NEVER GOT THAT) and that since there is no record of my last inspection I have to PAY for them to fix it. THEN goes on to say but if they had the record on file I wouldn't have to pay for them to fix it... whaaaat? So because someone didn't do their job and one that I was unaware of I have to pay for an employee's mistake cont

I'm calling corporate of course because this doesn't make sense. Anyone else had to deal with this or anything similar?

I really am not liking these big jewelry stores. My FI bought me a necklace from Kay's for Christmas 2010 and I fought with them for months about the chain breaking until finally (after they screwed up and cut it too short) they made me buy a new one. I decided never to shop there again. Now, my e-ring is from Zales and they have been nothing but trouble too. They sold FI the wrong ring so b/c they let him walk out of the store with a $3500 ring for only $1500, there are certain things they cannot do with my ring/for me. Ugh! I am sorry to hear this hun, I hope it works out!

My ring is from Kays. They always clean it in store. I will never purchase from them again though for a whole different issue. Good luck!

You need to get your ring inspected every 6 months. Not just cleaned. A cleaning is not an inspection. And inspection is where they look at it under the microscope and whatnot. Then they give you a printout sheet to slip in your sleeve with your receipt and warranty info. They would have told your husband this when he bought the ring. I know this from buying other things from them. It doesn't sound like you have ever gotten your ring inspected. So yes, she is in the right. Sorry :/

I didn't get my ring at Kay's but the store we did get it from has a similar policy. I have to have it inspected in April and October and they mark it on my file - that I keep - to show that its been done. As long as I get it inspected any repairs and even sizings are free of charge.

If its something that the store is at fault for, you should 100% call corporate.

@Kathleen that's what I took it in for. I said I would like to get my ring cleaned and she took it to inspect without saying anything I did not know the difference. Also my fiance takes it in more than I do and he has had the same experience as me.

We had a horrible experience with Kays when custom designing my engagement ring. They were no help at all. I ended up going over their heads and got in contact with their parent company. (sterling jewelers) The rep from Sterling jewelers was disgusted by the service we received and fixed the issue right away.

I have a Levian bridal ring from Kays and with any of my Levian jewelry I have to get every piece inspected every 6 months or else any repairs/damage will not be covered by Levian. Every time it is inspected they add the certificate to my file as well as give me a copy.

Normally if I go in to get my ring cleaned they will ask if it needs to be inspected as well. That is strange that they did not tell you it needed to be inspected. I have been lucky with the two kays stores ive been to that both have great managers.

Unfort this is what most jewelry stores do not tell their customers. Yes rings are supposed to be inspected so often to keep them warrantied. If you don't keep up with the inspections they wont honor the warranty any more. This is one of the reasons I am having a hard time on deciding on where to get the rings from. (FH is letting me pick them out lol)

There was definitely a miss communication, then. Because if you hand it to them and say "I'd like my ring cleaned." they will clean it. They won't inspect it. And they leave it on you to keep the records since they don't keep them (as far as I know). So it really sounds like it's not their fault. But maybe if you cause enough fuss they will take the blame. But you should really ask for inspections from now on instead of cleanings. There is a chart on the slip inside your clear sleeve with the receipt that details what the warranty is and a chart with what months you need it inspected, not just cleaned.

When I go (I've gone to 2 or 3 different locations) they always check it under the microscope, log it in the computer and then hand me a form with a stamp saying what date is was checked. Hope you get this worked out!

FH spoke with them and it will be taken care of. She says it's actually their protocol to ask when's the last time it was inspected or if we would like an inspection.

Now I'm wondering with other ladies on this post having issues with larger jewelry retailers if I should get the F's band from there :-/

Kay is pretty bad about stuff like that. We have insurance on both of mine, but I have seen them do that from time to time. They'll just take it from you, clean it real fast, and give it back. I ask for an "inspection" and not a cleaning, and I typically bring the warranty packet they gave us in the small, clear sleeve it came in. It's just to jog their memory that "hey, this needs to be documented that I'm bringing it in when I'm supposed to be."

The guys bands are not as bad since they don't have all the stones and the prongs(can't remember the actual term) holding the stones in.

I think the issue lies with going to the store and saying "I'd like to get my ring cleaned" versus "I'd like to get my ring inspected". I agree that when you said cleaned in previous times, it would've been good customer service for them to ask more questions. I got my ring from Jared's and they have the same process. They actually told me to bring in all of the forms from the original purchase each time I go.

They agreed to pay for it didn't even have to make a real fuss. I definitely have the paper I was given today in a safe place that I won't forget come 6 months!

Honeybee, have you thought about getting your FH's band from amazon? Like a cobalt ring? My FH and I discussed how he doesn't need or want an expensive gold ring. So he looked up online and really like this metal called cobalt and it cost him $60. He got two different sizes to try on and sent back the one he didn't want.
