Anyone skipping save the dates?

Jasmine, on December 18, 2016 at 12:40 PM

My fiancé and I decided to save money and send out early invites (were about 5 months out). Our budget is pretty tight, and I already emailed all my extended family to plan for travel. Is anyone else doing this or do you feel this is a major faux pas??

We are not sending save the dates. We just let all our immediate family and friends know the date when it was booked. News has traveled through the family already so we don't think there's a need for them.

I think it's great that you're skipping Save the Dates on a tight budget. But you're way way way early for invites. Pass the word on the date around Christmas, but wait on the invites.

For budgetary reasons only, we skipped them and put that money elsewhere.

On early invites... I have 2 friends I know that sent out invites ~ 8 months in advance. Everyone got their invite, everything turned out perfectly fine. I don't see what the big deal is about sending them "too early".

Just because you send them early doesn't mean you need to have an RSVP back early. As long as you're ok with folks waiting until closer to the event to confirm their attendance (and the possibility that some may change their mind - so not doing any A list B list stuff), then I don't see why it would be wrong to send them early. 95% of my guests are flying in from out of town and if I gave them 8 weeks to book flights, they might not get a good deal. If you book with airmiles, the earlier the better. But most of them are not comfortable booking flights before they're officially invited. Meh, you do you.

You are missing the point, Carly. OP has already informed the VIPs about the wedding, so they can book travel whenever they see fit to do so. In that case, sending the invites early serves absolutely no purpose and opens the door for problems. The system exists because it works in 100% of cases, and has for a very long time. I'm glad your two friends had good luck with sending early invites, but that isn't always true. Why sign up for increased risk when it is uneccessary? It also indicates to guests that you have no idea what you are doing as a host, which can influence whether they decide to attend since they can expect equally "creative" hosting at the event.

Some guests are slow to even confirm their attendance when they receive an invitation within the normal time frame of 6-8 weeks in advance of the wedding.

You think you're going to get people to confirm their attendance for your wedding 5 months from now?

    Good luck with that.

I'm cutting Save the dates ! I'm on social media and I do a monthly countdown so at this point the people I'm inviting are all on social media and get the point of when the day is. The others will get the notice 8weeks prior to the day!

I think Save the dates are good if you have out of town guests or are getting married around a holiday. I am getting married the Saturday after Thanksgiving so I am using save the dates even though there will only be one guest traveling besides us.

As a guest I prefer Save the Dates for out of town weddings. I usually plan my vacations several months in advance. We attended a wedding out of town last month. Right before getting the save the date I almost booked a vacation. Had I not gotten the save the date we would not have attended.

We're going with email std. VIPs already have info via phone. We'll send out more details and hotel block info in Feb.

We're assuming most people will use the website to get all the details anyway. Hotel info and info about the area will be posted for our OOT guests.

I don't know what I'm doing five minutes from now, let alone five months from now.

Also, FH and I are notorious for throwing away invitations after sending our RSVP and then having to contact the bride and groom before and getting the details again. If we got an invite five months away you can bet it would be in the trash and we would forget all about it. For the sake of people like us, don't send out your invites so early. You definitely don't need STDs but you do need people to remember to come to your wedding.
