Anyone skipping save the dates?

Jasmine, on December 18, 2016 at 12:40 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 33

My fiancé and I decided to save money and send out early invites (were about 5 months out). Our budget is pretty tight, and I already emailed all my extended family to plan for travel. Is anyone else doing this or do you feel this is a major faux pas??

We are just doing email paperless post STDs to save on printing and postage. ETA: 5 mon may be really early for formal invites though, as some people's plans will likely change when it gets closer and could cause a headache for your planning. Maybe look into an email STD for all guests first.

If you've already emailed your OOT guests who need to plan travel, there's no need for STD. There's also no need to send your invitations that early. Just send them 6-8 weeks out.

You mailed invitations already?? I fail to see how this saves money...

STD aren't necessary and many people don't send them.

You sent your invitations way too early.

I didn't do std. I felt like 1.5/2 months notice when my invites went out was sufficient. Plus we only had about 65 guests so most already knew the date without having to send them out. If you are worried, I'd just have sent out emails with the date info & say official invites will come later

STDs aren't necessary, but it's a rare person who can predict their life 5 months ahead....

It saves money as we don't have to pay for postage and printing twice. I see really no difference between sending out my save the dates now vs. the invitations. Both are alerting those I've invited to "save the date". I doubt by sending them out early my guests are going to forget.... plus, I see a lot of my extended family at Christmas so to be able to hand it to them saves on postage as well.

Jasmine- by emailing your VIPs you have already alerted them that they need to save the date, so there is no need for another reminder. STDs are totally optional so you are all good there. There are a lot of reasons that invitations do not go out early. Doing so will result in more no shows as people's lives change closer to the date. Many people cannot tell you that far in advance if they can attend. It just is pointless and opens up the whole process to a host of problems, all of which will be more stressful and expensive for you. You are all set right now. Send the invites on the normal timeline and you have nothing to worry about.

We're sending out holiday cards from the future Mr & Mrs Richard Smiley smile they double as save the dates. It doesn't seem like a waste to me Smiley winking (especially because I'm a wedding photographer myself and I LOVE doing this kind of stuff!)

Well that is exactly why STDs are unnecessary. You could have just mailed your invites 2 months ahead of time.

We are only sending them to our family that will need to make travel and hotel agreements. They mostly live several states out and we printed them ourselves from Walgreens. For 20 of them it cost us about $18.00 and we only sent out about 50 total.

STDs are a waste in my opinion. We are not using them.

You can skip save the dates but you send your invites way to early. It's hard to know what's going to happen in the next 5 months. When did you put your RSVP date for?

The faux pas is sending out wedding invitations 5 months out. For OOT guests, you only need to send out 10 weeks in advance. For local guests 6-8 weeks.

Not having STDs is a good way to save money .Word will get around. Also if you forget to send someone an STD, they may wonder why they won't be receiving an invitation.

We didn't. We don't have a bunch of oot guests so we just called them and let them know. We didn't do engagement photos either.
