Anyone sell your dress and regret it?

Chrissy, on June 12, 2015 at 9:00 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 40

I went a little over budget with my dress and I told myself that I could sell it after and probably get back a little for it. I know it would take a while, but its a pretty dress so it will probably sell (I guess every girl thinks that lol). FH said yesterday that I should keep it. He thinks I might want it for something later. I don't really see a point, though. So my question is, what is the point of keeping it?

My friend has had her wedding dress in a box for 10 years and hasn't even looked at. My mom has no idea where her dress even is and isn't bothered by it. I don't expect my future daughter to want to wear it because I wouldn't be caught dead in my mothers wedding gown.

I don't think I could alter it to be casual but that's a cool idea.

If I had a good way to use it again I would think about keeping it, because it would be more worth the price.

I'm curious about this, too. I spent a crap ton on my dress. Originally, I was going to do that shadow box thing with it folded in half so you just see the torso and the back of the shadow box is the bottom of the skirt. But that seems like a waste and something I would not appreciate. Mine will be difficult to sell, since I am 5'2/5'3 and I am having it altered to only wear 1 inch heels. So it will only be for short people! But I think I will try to sell it. There is no reason to keep it. I will probably keep my veil. Two of my friends wore their mother's veil at their wedding. That's more common. And I can use mine if I do anniversary boudoir pics in the future. But I think I officially decided to sell it after the wedding.

ETA: Agreed that the guest wedding dress idea is really clever and cool. But mine wouldn't work as a formal dress.

Yea most dresses that i see are way more bridal than mine and i dont think that you could make them wearable for another event other than a wedding but my dress shouldnt be too hard. '

I told myself I am keeping 1 shelf of souvenirs. That's why I forked out extra for the photographer I wanted. My bouquet, my veil (birdcage), our beer glasses, dried flower petals, cake topper, maybe a little more. not sure.

@Surfergirl You should totally transform that into a cocktail dress or something. How many people get to say that they wear their wedding dress all the time??

One way to re-use your dress is to have it made into christening gowns for your children, if you plan on having any. My former SIL did that and I questioned it at the time but thinking back, what better way to use it.

I'm going to keep mine - partially because I'm a sentimental pack rat and partially because I chose a super classic dress. It's not really on the trendy side. So, maybe. . . Just maybe a daughter or granddaughter of mine or future daughter-in-law will be interested in wearing it. Hell, I'll offer it to my MoH's kids someday. I guess I plan on being a pushy old lady someday! Haha!

I have no idea what I'll do with mine, but I don't think mine is sellable. I'm really petite and it's had a lot of alterations. I might keep it, but I'll probably donate it. Maybe some tiny bride will be thrilled to find a dress in her size.

@Future I have heard of that, but we aren't religious. Smiley sad

I rarely keep sentimental thing except for pictures. If it doesn't have a purpose or it won't be used again, I'd rather have the free space. I feel harsh when I do that but you cant keep everything. I think that is something that FH has a little bit of a hard time with. He wants to keep everything.

That is such a neat idea to shorten it and dye it if you have the right type of dress for that.

I'm reselling mine. I got a killer deal in a gown that retails almost $5000. I feel like I should pay it forward to another bride who fell in love with a couture dress and couldn't afford it.

I am stuck on this too. I LOOOVE my dress and am sad to see it not being used... I only paid $300 but it is truly the dress of my dreams. My nephew who has downs syndrome thought I was a princess at the wedding, so I have not ruled out wearing my dress each and every time I go to visit him. Smiley smile

I had ever intention to sell but after our wedding day I was super attached to it. I think going to have it shortened and use the left over fabric to make something - I've seen lingerie and necklaces made with wedding dress pieces. My moms friend used her dress to make small pillows for her kids which I thought was a cool idea

I hate having things that I have no use for anymore, so for me, it'll drive me crazy just having my dress sit in my closet for years on end when someone else could get use out of it.

I got a strapless dress and I just knew I was going to sell it (I hate strapless, I hate keeping things I don't use). Then my alterator added a lace jacket to it, changed the zipper to buttons and put some bling on the waist. When I tried it on after all that I just knew I was never letting it go.

I definitely see selling a dress if you don't think future generations might want it. Personally I think my dress is just classic enough that I could see my daughter wearing it so I plan to keep mine, but if I had bought the dress I originally wanted (which was way more trendy) I would probably try to sell it afterwards. I am also planning on doing some trash the dress photos for my one year anniversary so I will have to keep it at least that long anyway!

I wanted to sell mine to try and recoup anything I could since I spent so much. But after reading posts on here as well as watching the WW facebook group, I think it is very difficult to sell them. I've seen brand new dresses with tags that were 1k originally be posted over and over again for 200 bucks and no one bites. I'm asking my seamstress if my dress can be altered into a cocktail dress. She may not be able to, but I want to try.

My other issue with selling it is, I am very tiny and it was ordered to my specific measurements so the chances of being able to sell it are probably slim.

I have no idea what I'm going to do with my dress now that the wedding is over.. I really don't want to sell it, plus it would be hard to sell, its a size 0 and still needed to be taken in hugely in the bust and a bit on the sides.

I don't expect future children to wear it but I don't think I can give it up.
